Wheel & tire insurance

I’m told my 22 M3 Comp is due in NJ in the next 2 weeks or so. I’m on the Torrens. I’m interested in which wheel & tire insurance protection you all have used or would recommend?
Thanks!

Check out this thread that I created a while back:

Dealer wheel & tire warranty - worth it? https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1846392

Consensus seems to be pay-as-you-go is most likely a better option if you aren't unlucky or not good at parallel parking or have a significant other who likes to curb wheels on the regular.

I'll probably not go with it and take my chances.

The expected value of any warranty is negative. Meaning, on average, it is expected that you'll pay more in premiums than you get back in benefits. Otherwise, they wouldn't sell it to you.

Could you get more back? Yes, of course. I'd also ask yourself if your concerned about the cost of wheel and tire replacement, perhaps you shouldn't be buying a $100k (give or take) car.

100%. The original purpose of insurance was to protect the policy holder from a catastrophic financial hit. Now there is insurance for everything. I buy none of it. But of course 1 out of 10 will come out ahead and that's the story the dealer sells you on. No one ever tells you the story of their bad financial decisions.

Plus one on insurance should be to protect you from a "catastrophic financial hit". That's exactly how I view it. I have $1,000 deductibles on my cars, but also have a $6MM umbrella policy. Wheel and tire damage is not an insurable event.

just remember you can only purchase that when you sign. Once you leave the lot that program is not available

I do think there are conditions where this package makes sense. Perhaps you live in a new construction development where you're more likely to pickup a nail or 10 across the years.

Also know that you can "return" the unused portion of what you paid upfront if you sell the car before the warranty period ends.

All that said, I'm not getting it

I always point out to my dealer that in 35 or whatever years of driving I've never needed a new wheel, have only had 1 or 2 tire issues which didn't involve buying a new tire and I haven't curbed a wheel since my first low profile wheel on my 2003 G35. So I can't see that I'm going to suddenly need $800-1000 worth of tire/wheel repairs when I haven't needed it in the past 30 years worth of 12 cars or so. It's a no from me.

Agreed. Any protection I'd put on the car, PPF, ceramic, leather coating, etc I'm going to do my own research and pick what I think is the best product as opposed to the one option that the dealer gives me that I have zero opportunity to research.
