school me on active steering...

Im looking at a few CPO 335 e92s, and one has the active steering option on it with a 6spd. I never driven or heard much about the active steering on the 335 so I would like to get some opinion and explanation on it .

Lower parking lot speeds = higher turn ratio, i.e. less turning the wheel to go around

Higher highway speeds = lower turn ratio, i.e. more turning the wheel to change lanes

I have active steering and I love it. When at speed and you enter into a turn, you can feel the steering tighten. It's really an unnecessary expense if buying new, but I bought my car CPO and it came with it. Now that I have it, I love it.

Active steering makes the car feel numb. I wouldn't get it. My sis has it and it's horrible.

Search "Active Steering" You'll should get a number of results.

One of the best options ever! Doesn't degrade the feeling of the steering one iota.

I agree. One of the best options. It does not take away from my driving experience at all. Beware though that it not only costs more on the initial purchase, but causes higher maintenance fees, e.g. a wheel alignment with active steering is nearly double (at least at my dealer) than one without.

I have it. I could take it or leave it. My wife loves it. If you get it, you'll never know you have it until you drive a dealership loaner without it.

I love it.

Yes, the service is expensive. My dealer told me the alignment on active steering vehicle takes 5-6 hours and it will cost more than $500 (if you were paying out of warranty). But I'm leasing for 3 years and not worried about that.

I love AS because my wife does not complain about how heavy normal BMW steering is.

Is the Active Steering and Servotronic the same thing? Or are they totally different?

That is the single sole reason why I don't have AS... so that my wife wouldn't want to drive it!

Wow, from my understanding I thought it was the exact opposite! Correct me if I'm wrong.

on the ratios or the turning part? It may be reverse on the ratios, but the turning is a fact, why would you turn MORE if you have active steering? doesn't make sense :P

Totally different. Servotronic is variable assist power steering while AS is variable ratio steering.

I drove a car with active steering and while it is nice.... $1400 is way over priced.
