Brake Service - no pads available for weeks

Our X7 has been at the dealership for last 2 weeks waiting on front brake pads. Service says they are out of stock and have called everywhere with no one willing to give up what little stock they have on hand.

Dealer calls to BMW have some delivery coming in first week of Oct - 2 weeks out.

Has anyone else dealt with this mess taking your car in for service? Front brake pads are a common service item, to be out 4 weeks in the supply chain is a crazy indication of how bad the supply shortages are.

It's pretty crazy... dealers are getting in trouble for some states as people submit lemon law claims due to the supply chain issues. I'm not sure if a wear and tear item would qualify, I'm sure they'd throw on some aftermarket pads if so, but I've read of people forcing buy backs because they couldn't get a defective part replaced within 30 days.

I would hunt for the parts on my own and have an independent shop do the work. They look to be backorder almost everywhere but bimmerwold and a few others still show stock. Just ask dealer for the par number they are searching for. Ex.These are the pads that apply to our x740i with msport brakes/towing pkg https://www.bimmerworld.com/Brakes/S...106888459.html

Similar story… backordered, took 3 weeks to arrive, fortunately in my case it was driveable while waiting for pads. Finally done last Friday.

Isn’t there any aftermarket pads available yet?

Looks like Autozone stocks some Brembo pads.
https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-...ke-pads/bmw/x7
…of course fitment will depend on what brakes you have but you should call/search around.

I'm not there yet but my 2020 X7 has 32K miles on it and the front are at 10mm while the back are at 5mm. So I will need new rear brakes soon at a minimum.

I live in a rural area so I don't have that much stop and go traffic except when driving around town or driving in Seattle Traffic. I'm reaching out to my dealer now to see what the lead time is for new brakes.

Sounds like your front still have a lot of life left while rear needs replacement soon which is odd, I thought the X7 was front brake biased. (at least I see a lot more brake dust on my front wheels compared to rear). I would've expected front to wear much faster than rear.

I thought the same, but doing some further reading it all depends on the drive system and weight. Also, keep in mind that the X7 is rear wheel drive biased.

Maybe Auricom knows why the rear would wear quicker than the front. I do know the rear brakes are much smaller than the front brakes. Auricom posted the different braking systems for the X5 and X7 somewhere on here. I think it was in the X5 forum.

I have had my rear pads wear faster on all newer BMW's. I believe it has to do with RWD bias and DSC/e-diff operation.

I had scheduled service a week out before I brought my car in for service. It's been six weeks now waiting for breaks/rotors.

This (DSC and diff operation)…. In general, the front brakes will do most of the "work" to stop any car. That is why the brakes are larger in the front than the rear on pretty much all cars on the road. That said, safety tech like traction control (i.e. DSC, etc) has become more advanced and selectively apply the brakes more often than you might think when driving under certain conditions - and the rear brakes are being used more now as DSC tech advances. I see the same type of additional rear brake pad wear on my wife's 2013 X3…

Would it be recommended to purchase any kind of extended maintenance warranty on 3yr/30 or 36k mi. lease as I have the msport brakes? I don’t drive aggressively and rarely in stop and go traffic. No idea how long these brakes and or rotors last

Unless you eat through brakes based on your environment and driving style, I would say no. Keep your money (spend it on something else), and just spend the money to get the brakes done if needed - especially if you are leasing and you are confident you will turn in the X7 at the end of the lease.

I typically opt-in for the Care+ (brakes/wipers[/clutch]) package negotiated down to $400-500, because I'm used to having it previously, enjoy getting new wipers, and don't really want to get hit with a decent bill sized shortly before I hand a car in. I've gotten brakes done in every SUV I've had between 30 and 35k miles so far, but that also might be a function of my SA milking whatever he can out of the maintenance contract before I hand it in.

If you can get it that cheap for the time period that works for you AND you are confident that you will eat through the brakes based on your use and environment - go for it. The brake job on the X7 (any variant) will be easily more than $500 at the dealer. But the BMW marketing Dept is pretty good at hedging their bets on if an expensive brake job will occur during the advertised period for any of their maintenance program packages, and they usually price them well accordingly (to the benefit of the dealer, not the consumer).
