M340i Coolant Leak after Oil Filter Housing Replaced
Hi All,
I took my M340i (2020) in to the main dealer last week. It was in for its first oil change service. After an hour someone came out and told me it needed a new oil filter housing. It wasn't in stock so I had 5 days in a courtesy car, a 430i M Sport - nice car but felt very boring and basic compared to the M340i. Anyway, I have had it back a couple of days, started it up today and got a low coolant warning! Looked in the reservoir and it was so low I could only just see some fluid right at the bottom. Called the dealer who told me to top it up with water and take it in tomorrow. They 'said' they checked the coolant level in the service and couldn't explain why it might be empty. I strongly suspect that the work they did has caused this leak, but I don't have the technical knowledge to back me up. Can anyone suggest how the above work could result in a sudden and very significant coolant leak? BTW - I am getting a bit peeved with the dealer. They had the car 5 days 'forgot' to wash and valet it, and didn't even clean any surfaces for Covid sanitation. I told them this and all they did was hand me a couple of disinfectant wipes to do it myself! Not only that - they didn't tell me the filter housing was a manufacturers defect (I only found out be investigating myself). Any knowledge on a link between the coolant leak and oil filter housing work will help my complaint. cheers! Last edited by harpagus; 09-28-2021 at 05:30 PM.. Have you gotten the low coolant warning since topping it off?
I've gotten the Low Coolant warning before on my F30 340i, haven't yet on my G20. It was a known issue that the cars come with low fluids from the factory, and the dealership failed to top off before customer delivery. I had the dealership top it off right at the service entrance (they said they keep coolant handy just for these occasions), and I hadn't had the issue since. If it continues to give the warning message after topping off, do be concerned. But if not, it's more than likely a factory to dealership error. |

No, but I've not driven it since I topped it up (well I drove about 30 miles straight after). It's not a new car though, this is after a service and an oil filter housing replacement. I've had it about 18 months, and no coolant problems at all before the service. Then 48hrs after I get it back, the coolant is nearly empty!
