Stripped out rear license plate bracket
Hey all! I received my '22 M4 6 speed about a month ago and upon trying to replace the temp plate (rear) with the permanent one it looks like I have stripped out the license plate bracket. Unlike the F82, this generation seems to be using self tapping screws and the bracket looks to be of some rubber material. Has anyone ran into this issue?
Update: After browsing the X3M/X5M forums I found that they are having similar issues with this poor quality license plate bracket. I literally got 1 use from mine before the 2 of the 4 holes will not hold the screw. On top of that the screws that came with mine are not long enough to use a license plate frame with a metal license plate (paper plate was fine). Last edited by jay_sd; 10-01-2021 at 06:11 AM.. One of the screws nearly stripped a hole in the new one LOL. Service guy thinks that the X3M/X5M plate bracket should work so I am going online to buy one with proper metal inserts for the screws. Last edited by jay_sd; 10-01-2021 at 08:19 PM.. |

Any update? Was having the same exact issue. I ended up rotating the bracket 180 since the bottom two holes hadn't been threaded yet. Still feels super flimsy - won't be surprised if my plate flies off on the highway one day.

Anyone who had or has an M2C can comment on the difference?
I've had no problems after numerous screw changes on my old M2C. If they're interchangeable, M2 brackets would work better. |

In the future buy the cheap bracket with brass inserts off of Amazon. BMW has been using the same license plate bracket for YEARS, no use spending so much money on a damn near disposable part.

This bracket fits just fine and has the threaded inserts. I put it on my M3 this morning.

I can report that the license plate holder is better than what BMW provided. What a piece of crap BMW provided. Talk about cost-cutting measures.
The new holder is glossy, with a harder and glossy plastic finish. It comes with all the necessary hardware to install. Below are the pictures. This is what BMW ships with the car (pure crap). Notice there are not machine screws bushings: This is the one I purchased from Amazon: This is the Amazon license plate holder installed on the car I used the black plastic screws from BMW to install the new one (only because they were black), however, there seems to be a gap between the head of the screw and the plate holder, which means there is the possibility that water will leak inside (maybe...), so I recommend you use the screws provided with the kit. They are silver, but no one will be able to see them, unless you take the plate off. Since the machine screws are silver (with a torx head), you may want to pick up a set of plastic black covers for the screws. This is what I did. The covers protect the screws, though the vendor claims they are stainless steel. Overall, I am happy with the outcome, at a third of the price of the BMW version. These plate holders are affixed to the trunk lid with 2 screws, or with 4 screws. Our cars use the 2 screws style. To be sure, you can remove the license plate and take a look. |

I'm replacing the license plate in a month with something containing a '4' vs. a '3', at which point I'll install the black plastic screw caps. |
