2022 M40i exhaust note not as loud?
Recently picked up 2022 x3 m40i after coming from a 2019 x3 M40i. Its only been 5 days and I don't know if its me or not, but I feel like the exhaust is not as loud or burbly as my previous 2019. It sounds ok but just doesn't have that umph burbly sound I'm so used to. Could It be because its still breaking in?
I'm wondering if anyone else has similar experience?

My '21 is my first X3 but there was the same discussion about the '21s vs. earlier years. Supposedly reduced pops and crackles but I have no basis for comparison.

I think it has to do with new emission laws in EU.

Agreed, my '22 x3 m40i is not very loud. I've removed fuse 203 to keep the flap on the left side completely open and disabled ASD. It's a more accurate exhaust note, but it's nothing to rave on about. A BM3 tune would more than likely help with the burbles and saying goodbye to the warranty.

what a bummer I feel like there should be an update to enable the burbles. I'm not familiar at all with bimmercode but would this be something that is doable?

So speaking from experience.. at first I was very unhappy with the exhaust. After a few tweaks I'm definitely happier, though I still have my reservations.
In any mode other than sport, the pops and burbles are basically nonexistant. If you switch to sport individual/sport plus, you can very easily and predictably coax out the burbles. Every upshift under moderate to hard acceleration produces a pop, and laying off the gas after moderate/high acceleration produces burbles. What I more recently learned was that pushing the shifter from D to S actually increases the propensity to produce the burbles as well. Now, my disappointment is in the volume. Its not super loud. I cant tell if its a result of the great sound insulation or not, but it doesnt sound super loud. I mean, I guess it shouldn't be obnoxiously loud. But compared to the general exhaust sound (which I guess is also pumped in a bit through the speakers artificially) its not like you're driving a race car. However my view is kind of skewed as my other bmw has a full catback exhaust (previously also has catless DPs) which burbles like a monster. Overall its not bad, especially because its super easy to brung out the burbles whenever you want due to how predictable the sound is to produce. In normal driving I can very easily do the "right things" to make the pops appear. Its not as organic as in my 135i, but honestly I can make the car pop whenever. I just dont think its as loud as it was in the past, and definitely more muted than in my other car.

People are seeing a sudden change because they are changing cars and previously had no updates. I you look at the 3 series forum for those with 340i Touring and saloons then this has been an issue for a while.
It seems BMW have even changed the sound via over the air updates with fewer burbles, lower volume etc. Now many rightly feel annoyed that they bought a car with a certain sound and didn't expect it to change via updates and are complaining but I don't think BMW are winding back any of those changes but you certainly aren't alone in noticing changes not only due to the EU changes. |

I will be the outlier, I was 135km ( 84mph), 2022 M40i for a short drive. In sport mode, minimal burps/pops; however the engine was humming at a loud constant engine sound. My former F15 V8 (N63TU), was not that noticeable. This can be overbearing on long drives. Switching to comfort the constant hum was gone. It was windy yesterday with lots of cabin whistling. I wonder at what rate the interior engine noise is amplified by the fake piped in sound.
I will go to "General Settings" later: hope I find what I am looking for https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/03/13/b...-a-revelation/ Speaking of toning down. My friend says his X1 was neutered/toned down as part of the recall campaign. Conspiracy theory, to upsell upcoming X1 M35i ETA 7/23. |

So having a 2021 I have no comparison, but when starting my car it pops and burbles pretty good. I am curious if the 2022’s still “fart” when it’s shifting in sport mode? I can’t stop laughing every time I hear this punching the accelerator!

To the person that asked about Bimmercode being able to introduce more pops/burbles, AFAIK this is an ECU map/tune thing. Not something that can be done with simple coding. You'd need to change the ignition timing to get these pops and I highly doubt that Bimmercode can do that.

The shifter change has always worked for me, to get a louder exhaust sound.
Mine is still well within the break-in period, so I've been keeping it out of Sport Plus. Even in my '19, that was where I'd get the really good sounds. |

I agree completely, I went to go lease a 2022 X4 M40i last week. Ended up purchasing a 2019 instead, strictly for the exhaust and engine sound.
