ISTA - No Communincation

Greetings all,
New to the forum and was wondering if anyone can guide me in solving in what I think is a communication issue. Thank you in advance!

Vehicle
BMW x5 E53 – 2003

I got a hold is ISTA an to see if I can solve, why I have Traction-ABS-Brake and Check Engine Lights are on. ABS module was rebuilt 4 months ago.

Items verified

  • ISTA Communication setting on (COM 1)
    Com 1 settings
    Latency = 1
    Speed - 115200
Fuses #2 and #52 (Diagnostics Plug), have are good.
    K-DCAN – Tested.
ODB2 – Connector. Verified that pin 8 was connected and made a good connection to k+DCAN Cable.
INPA looks like it can read the engine

ISAT is not able to identify the vehicle or read the modules.

ISTA Messages
  • The Vehicle could not be identified Successfully. Check vehicle Interface and 'PAD Active.
  • The Vehicle identification number could not be determine from the vehicle.

Not sure what next needs to be checked. please advise, thank you again.

I've heard about certain ISTA/CABLE compatibility issues with models prior to 2013, but I don't recall the details nor the solutions, sorry.

This was the issue myself and friends always ran into. Tried multiple installation source files till I found one that works. Was not always same installer with car model, ie E46 vs E92.

Good luck. Can be a big pain

Check you connection in settings>VCI Config and select “Yes” for “Ethernet as preferred communication channel when connected via ICOM?”

I had same issue or similar and that’s what my fix was. Not sure what cable setup you got. I was using cable with Ethernet to USB adapter.

As he is trying to access E53, I assume he is using K-DCAN cable, if not ICOM. For K-DCAN cable, you must select 'Ediabas default settings (ediabas.ini)' under interface type. In ediabas.ini config file, the interface should be set to 'Interface = STD:OBD'. In the same folder where ediabas.ini is located, there is also obd.ini subconfiguration file. Make sure that Port is set to 'Com1', Hardware is 'USB' and retry is 'ON'. That is of course if you are using K-DCAN.

I’ve read through as many forum posts as I could find and have set all the port / latency / EDSUBIAS settings as recommended and still am getting this error. I’m on ISTA+ with K +DCAN cable.

Would love some help.
