BMW of North America Reports Q4 2021 and Full Year 2021 U.S. Sales Results.

2021 BMW Deliveries Increase 20.8% vs 2020.
2021 MINI Deliveries Increase 6.4% vs 2020.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 4, 2022… BMW of North America today reported Q4 2021 and full year 2021 sales results for the BMW and MINI brands in the U.S.

BMW Brand
In the fourth quarter of 2021, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 93,031 vehicles, a 5.8% decrease from the 98,750 vehicles sold in the fourth quarter of 2020. For the full year 2021, BMW brand sales increased 20.8% on total sales of 336,644 compared to the 278,732 vehicles sold in 2020.

MINI Brand
MINI brand sales in the U.S. totaled 7,860 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2021, a decrease of 8.1% vs the 8,549 vehicles sold in the fourth quarter of 2020. For the full year 2021, MINI brand sales increased 6.4% on total sales of 29,930 vehicles compared to the 28,138 vehicles sold in 2020.

While the automotive industry continues to navigate the challenges of the ongoing global pandemic and associated supply chain issues, BMW Group has once again shown a positive year of growth in the U.S. This was delivered on the strength of the company’s dynamic product portfolio, flexibility of its global production network, and strong dealer collaboration. The company and its network of dealer partners have worked together to manage inventory levels and fulfill strong customer demand for new vehicles. In the first quarter of 2022, BMW customers will begin to take the first deliveries of two all-new, fully-electric offerings – the BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle and BMW i4 Gran Coupe.

With the various supply chain issues it's good to see the brand finding ways to get vehicles into consumers hands.

It's pretty good to see total new car sales are above pre-pandemic levels. BMW total sales for 2021 (337K) is above 2019 numbers (325K)

BMW profitability up absolutely, due to lower incentives and de-contenting for sure. But think about dealer profitability. Now that is a number that is WAY up. From selling cars at big discounts to MSRP in 2019, to full MSRP as a general minimum to $2k-$20k ADM in 2021. Now those guys are raking it in.

Did bmw kill the bonus program / sales volume targets? I'm guessing profits from sales are offsetting bonuses and higher than any bonus year prior.

The way I read this is BMW is laughing all the way to the bank... higher gp per car sold, parts taken out and price increases... get ready for more because they know consumers will pay.

BMW fared far better than GM, which was down 43%, in Q4

BMW has probably beaten MB in unit sales in 2021 for the first time since 2015.

MB has yet to announce. Probably delaying the bad news after the latest fire-related product recall.

Pieter Nota, global head of sales, is already claiming the global crown. Too much for MB to make up after Q3. Good for us all as BMW fans and fanboys.

In the US, BMW will beat MB as well most likely. At the end of Q3, MB was at 215,776 passenger vehicles and total 254K (including the Sprinter vans). MB would have needed to sell over 115K passenger units to beat BMW in the US - don't see how that happens with the supply chain constraints.

X5 continues to carry BMW NA sales numbers. Not a surprise. This is a reminder to iX product managers: does iX have the same DNA to replicate X5 success ...

Every car maker can pretty much sell what it makes these days. The challenge is making enough given the semiconductor shortage and logistic bottlenecks.

BMW has done a better job than most at keeping the manufacturing lines moving which is why it has improved its sales compared to its competitors.

Wonder if the M4 sales numbers are included as 4-series and if the M4 is outselling the M3.

This gives me confidence eventually dealer pricing will even out again when supply constraints ease... BMW literally sold every single x5 and x7 it could produce and got basically no growth between them, we know there is plenty more capacity when supply chains normalize no way they can leave all those potential unit sales on the table

Just observing the general trend..

We're back to pre-pandemic sales levels. Demand has basically been playing "catching up" throughout 2021 as a result of lower than normal sales in 2020 (basically, people who delayed buying cars in 2020 decided to go ahead and buy cars in 2021 creating the flurry of demand, and with still strained capacity, automakers AND dealers took profits).

So where does this leave us going forward? Well if slowing Q4 sales are any indication.... maybe 2022 is the year of normalization, and hopefully by late summer/early fall we begin to see normal pricing again.

Of course.... this is only one manufacturer.
