Oil cooler thermostat seal

How often are you guys swapping this seal out?

I replaced mine about a year ago. A month later it was leaking, figured okay I fucked something up or bad seal, whatever. Now here I am again, and it's leaking. Both times I used the Elring brand seal (I have read about them not having nubs which help keep it seated but I know my last seal had them).

check the square oil tstat seal and oil cooler o-rings, the fan will blow a slow seep back to make it look like the cooler

I'm aware, they're both good. I've dealt with those leaks before, they're both dry but i'll be doing them again with the larger gasket this weekend.

For the oil cooler lines: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...34-17222245358

They are not leaking.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...ng-11428637820

This is leaking. It's seeping in the little crevice on the right side by the oil filter cap.

Ahh gotcha. My advice would be what the others said, if you are sure it's coming from there then the only thing I can think of is maybe there was a particle of something on the mating surface, did you thoroughly scrape any gunk off of both sides when you did it? Dealer didn't when they did mine before I bought it and I had to do it 5k miles later.

Yeah, i've cleaned it both times. Will try a third, even used a razor and a scotch brite. Is what it is I guess.

try oil dye, you could have a crack or porosity, and check the cooler with a flat edge once off.

I run the Molygen oil for purposes like this. It's definitely just seeping from the gasket. Just was wondering if anyone else seems to have this issue somewhat commonly.

It is reoccurring but not that often. I'd inspect the seal when u take it off to try and figure out what's causing it. Maybe to much pressure in crank case?

Was a thought of mine. Couple things though, valve cover is a little over a year old and no signs of cracks or leaks. High side vent hose is a few months old, I confirmed it was still working last week. I have a low side catch can, thought perhaps it may be freezing but even after a 12° night I checked it and air was flowing no issue. I also have an oil breather cap so if any pressure were building it realistically should've been vented through there almost immediately. I also confirmed that is working as intended and not frozen.

To clarify, I believe he was talking about this gasket as well. There's a O ring under the metal cap that leaks over time. Make sure it's not from there as well.

Not sure if you checked that to.

Yep That one is good. When Zero To 60 posted an ebay link to some of them I bought 3

Replaced the gasket last night. Drove for about 30min, stopped and checked, there were no leaks.

Drove 30min back, checked and no leaks.

Start it up this morning, drive about 10min and parked it. Checked, and there was a small puddle of oil in the same place!! I cleaned it up, drove 40 minutes and no leak!

To me it seems that it's only leaking when below freezing, and stops leaking once warmed up. Could this be an issue with my thermostat housing?

As explained earlier. That is not leaking. It is leaking exactly like the attached photo (not my photo, from google search).

And no, it's not from the oil filter cap.

Wait... usually leaking like that is because of the O ring from the oil filter cap. Maybe that's it?

It's not. There is no sign of leakage from the cap. You can physically see a small oil trail leading to that pocket from the thermostat. Before I replaced the gasket it was also leaking on the underside, it is now only leaking in this area.

I have now covered ~150mi since I replaced the gasket yesterday. It has only leaked once in that time :

Exact same issue on my friends 335 right now. Was doing this the other day and could see it gushing from the thermostat but now its not even leaking anymore….

I'm genuinely thinking it has something to do with the weather and gasket location. Going to start setting my phone up to watch it when I start it in the mornings, seems to be the only time it leaks.

I'm pretty sure its the Elring gasket. Read the most recent reviews on FCP about that one, they seem to leak when its cold. Try the genuine BMW gasket (I know its more), but hopefully that fixes it for you.

Interesting. I'll give them a read.

Just odd to me this gasket sealed perfectly for a year and then the new one leaks in the cold too.

It's an easy enough swap, an hour max so maybe i'll give the BMW a go. My Elring is on warranty so can offset the cost of the BMW a bit.
