No more carbon roofs??!!
Just spoke to my SA. Apparently BMW is soon deleting carbon roofs due to shortage. Can anyone in-the-know confirm?

I spoke to my CA today and he didnt specify that my build would be affected.
If laser lights or carbon roof is removed from my build, i will be cancelling my order. |

I'm gonna go ahead and call BS on that one, as there are no electronic components in the carbon roof (as opposed to the ones in the moonroof, which I know they are limited in supply on). Also, BMW owns the CFRP plant where the roofs are made, as far as I can remember. They would have to plan poorly to have less supply of those than, say, exhaust flap controllers.

Yeah, IF this is true, it’s just poor planning on BMWs part, which I can definitely see being the case, especially after the QC disaster that I (and a bunch of others) am going through.

No idea where BMW gets the carbon parts. Someone posted BMW owns the carbon fiber plant. I can say for certain the carbon pieces are massively constrained on the Cadillac Blackwing I have on order. My M order is already in, I want the carbon roof for sure!

I'm only sharing what my SA told me. Not claiming truth or not. That said, if BMW does own the CFRP plant, I am doubting that they manufacture the actual ingredients for the roof....just mold and assemble is my guess. So if there is significant shortage of the ingredients needed to make the roof, it's feasible that could cause the shortage.

Yeah - I totally understand that your SA is the one making the claim. And, it is totally plausible that they have run out of base nylon fiber or resin to make the CFRP with, but the same resin manufacturers also supply other industries, and they've been out of the woods for a while now, production wise. If you want to know the rough mechanics of the supply chain for the roofs, here is a good start: https://www.bmw.com/en/performance/c...-in-a-car.html Quote:

Am I the only one that isn't really bothered by this? Yes, the carbon fiber roof is really nice, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Now, if they were to get rid of the specialized frame, bigger/beefier tires, specialized suspension, nicer seats or most important of all, the S58 engine, ANY of those would be a deal breaker for me.
Also, if the carbon fiber roof is deleted, I would expect about a $1000 reduction in price. |
