Anyone measured the dB (decibels) in an iX interior?

Has anyone measured the dB (decibels) in an iX?.
Everyone says it's super quiet but what does that translate to numbers?

Bjorn measured it. In the results are in the Noise tab of the spreadsheet found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...echMVJH37kwgjE

Here is a screenshot of the table with results for winter driving. Third on that list of EVs ordered by average decibel level. Pretty good.

Interesting. I've recorded a couple of drives in my e-tron running on 21" wheels , all season tyres, summer conditions and mostly dry roads and the average is 65.04dB.

This is a very nice and comprehensive list.

Is it updated all the time? Or where can we find the latest version?

I'm going to try to remember to take a decibel reading in our current car on the way tomorrow for our second iX test drive and then another reading then while by wife is having a go. I've not really been in electric cars aside from Uber Priuses so I hadn't experienced how quiet a car could be until my first iX test drive. The salesman took the car for a spin before we switched and I had a drive and the quietness was really quite shocking. I started to get a bit of motion sickness while in the passenger seat (I sometimes get motion sickness in the back of cars but not in the front passenger seat). It just felt so unreal.

I measured 64db in my X5 50i using my watch @100kmh on reasonably smooth bitumen. The same stretch of road in my iX40 at the same speed measured 58db.

Wow - that's a reduction of 6dBA - half the sound pressure (logarithmic scale: not actually half as loud - it's complicated - but definitely a distinguishable difference to the human ear). Here's the difference between 69dBA and 56dBA:

I’ll post a video soon of a cabin noise comparison I did between the iX and my e-tron :-)

I borrowed one from my dealer recently. It might be reasonably quite when just rolling at a constant speed but under hard acceleration there was a horrendous whine from the motors. Regarded it much noisier than my m440ix which is astonishing

That sounds to me like your tested just had the iconic sounds turned on, which adds fake noise through the speakers. The motors themselves are perfectly silenced even at full throttle accelerations.

You can simply turn off the iconic sounds if it is not to your liking.

If you watch the video here that LittleJoe posted above, you'll see that the first couple were perfectly silent and then he did some with the sound turned on.

Something to note is that the iX motor is very well isolated from the main chassis in terms of sound and vibration. I saw a video showing the motor mounts and they are quite massive. BMW did a great job here versus the competition. I hate the sound of the motor whine in the Tesla 3/Y. It sounds like a high pitched banshee.

That sound in the model Y is beyond annoying. I already knew about it before test driving it from watching some Dirty Tesla FSD beta videos where he complained about it too, but it was instantly noticeable on my test drive and so my brother who did not already know about it noticed it immediately too since we started with the radio off.

I didn't experience it in the model 3 I test drove not the one I rented on Turo for a day, but I have heard that some people have it on the 3 as well.

And this is a situation where having a dealer as a middle man can be useful.... You can convince the dealer that it is an issue for you and then even if the manufacturer says it is within spec, which is what Tesla does, they can at least try to help remedy it for you to keep you happy and make you a return customer. Although I don't think they could do much to keep the motor from creating the whine, Tesla would need to redesign the motor for that, they could add some sound proofing material that would prevent it from being audible inside the cabin.

We have a 2020 X5 with the double pane glass and the iX was noticeably quieter. And the X5 is quiet. The Tesla models are noticeably louder than the X5. The i4 was also very quiet.

I think I'm in the minority in that I like the whine from the tesla motors when I put my foot down, it's like a space ship. Maybe it's because I can't hear much of it from all the wind noise through its leaky windshield though. 🤣

we are not necessarily talking about the "normal" motor sound, but rather the very high pitch annoying sound that occurs in the model Y and possibly others.

In the video below, it is very noticeable at just past 11 seconds (and of course again on each other acceleration he did). That's what I was talking about. You may need to turn your sound up high depending on your speakers/headset. I don't think you will find that sound pleasant.

OMG what's wrong with the headlights? There's a large area directly in front of the car that is dark as night and not illuminated. Did anyone with any actual experience design those terrible headlights? God how I hate Tesla's poorly designed cars!
