Drive it back or Transport? Colorado -> New Jersey!
Long story short - I was (still am) number 9 on a wait list for an M3xc allocation. A few weeks ago a Bimmerpost member out in Colorado backed out of a deal and was nice enough to post it here. Few minutes later i was able to take over his deal Car arrives arrives at port hueneme in a few weeks. I plan on purchasing the car use it for a year or so then hopefully flip it when my order arrives sometime in 2023 lol
Do i drive it back home or transport it? Things to consider - Mileage - Estimated 1800 miles total Need to complete first service midway? lol hilarious No PPF Transport cost - $1650 Will be my daily |

Thats a lot of highway driving, which isn't good for the break in period. You want to be at variable speeds and RPMS for the first 1200 miles and a long ass road trip wont allow for it. |

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else on here so far. That's too far for me. It wouldn't be the best break-in. Plus if you are reselling the car in a year, those are 2,000 miles I'd want to keep off the odometer. BTW, I'm definitely not an expert on this but the fee you've been quoted for transport seems a little high.

Geez that's tough decision. I lean towards transport.
You just gotta weigh the pros and cons I guess. I'll say this, if you drive it back 100% take the time to tape your front end up with masking tape. I'd never forgive myself if I let another front end of one of my new cars get all sand blasted again. |

Need to be mindful of the tires. You could be driving through freezing temperatures which means you'd need to take the performance tires off before you leave.

Also I didn’t mention it but for that long of a distance I would make sure you get a covered transport. It will be extra $$ but peace of mind and safety. Like I said before you have a beautiful car and anything can happen with going that far. Spend a little more up front and get the car safely.

I’m on the other side of the fence. Most of the cars I’ve bought recently have been road trips, some of them all the way across the country. I love the adventure of flying in and driving a car home. I’m in Vancouver BC and I’ve done 2 cross-country winter road trips where I fly in, get winter tires mounted, and drive home (Z3M Coupe and a Z4M Coupe).
You can get a temp PPF (track wrap) on Amazon. Saved me from any rock chips. The experience is worth the small hit on depreciation IMO. Also regarding break-in, you can vary your speed and use 5th through 8th gears too. |

This. I completely didn't even think about that. I definitely wouldn't drive summer performance tires at highway speeds if he temperatures are near 40 degrees. That is a recipe for disaster.

If you drive the biggest problem is getting it serviced along the way. You don't want to wait until 1800 for the 1200 mile service. I'm told that could cause warranty problems down the road. You might want to pre-schedule the service along the route. Also, I overcame the "varied engine speed" break-in recommendation by downshifting to 5th every once in a while and doing a little acceleration pull. I drove from the SC Performance Center to NJ in December.

The trip was uneventful, and as I mentioned I was careful to vary speed, downshift every few minutes and run in 5th, and do light acceleration pulls. I try very hard to follow the break-in recommendations. (It's hard keeping it under 5,000 rpm.) We split the drive in two and drove a few hours on pick up day. We stayed in Salem, VA. The drive home to NJ on the second day wasn't quite so long, although I've driven straight through in the past.
