iDrive 8 Screen

Anyone know what the iDrive 8 screen is actually made of? Glass? Acrylic? Combo? In my X5 the iDrive 7 screen is glass, but the instrument cluster screen is acrylic - different cleaning materials. Such a long expanse of glass seems like it might be prone to damage - on the other hand, it seems to collect fingerprints fairly easily, and it's easier to just wipe off glass (have a screen protector on my iDrive 7 touch screen, but not the cluster), and it's less susceptibleto scratches. Is the instrument cluster half a different material?

Housed within a magnesium bracket, it is a 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display that uses non-reflecting glass

Thanks! Very helpful - looks like a microfiber in the glove box is mandatory!

Yes we are finding it's a total dust magnet. We have a microfibre in the glove box - always tricky to use it without accidentally pressing anything on the touchscreen side.

Is there any lockout function, like on Volvo (hold home key), so you can clean without triggering touch functions?

Not sure (only had car for 6 weeks) - would be great if there was...

iDrive 7 has a couple of clicks and you can turn off the screen - it's on one of my shortcut buttons. I'm guessing iDrive 8 has the same.

Yes, idrive8 also has same option. You can turn off the screen from menu or with a shortcut created.

Additionally, you can also adjust to turn it off when door is open and car is not in drive on mode.

Saw an iX the other day and there were not any hotkeys. Are they part of the screen or dropped in IDrive8?

There are no hotkeys but there us a shortcuts drawer that you access by swiping down from the top of the screen. Check my AMA thread for photos.

You can also access it by pushing the iDrive wheel forward

So the old quick shortcut method was press a button and the new one is press two buttons? Am I reading that right?

Yes you are. And I believe there are only 4 shortcuts now. 8 before.

Looks like 8 Shortcut buttons, plus 4 System buttons, plus 5 "Suggestion" buttons. That's actually better access than iDrive 7 to features you want to use quickly and every day with a push of the controller (with "Screen Off" - Bildschirm aus - already one of the System buttons)....

You are right. First I can only see 4 but once I add a 5th I see a total of 8
