Reasonable price for trans service?
I just installed my new coilovers myself and I'm sick of wrenching for now lol.
I'm at 96k miles on original fluid so I think it's time to do the fluid, pan, mechatronic sleeve, etc. I got a quote from a well reputed local indy and they said $1,100 using all ZF parts and LiquiMoly toptec 1800. I was expecting a bit less but when I saw the breakdown it seems about right. Thoughts? |

must resit to roast this thread title...
If you want to know if its reasonable , go FCP euro for a maintenance kit for the ZF, add 20% markup and 4h . iirc my zf8 was 600$ in parts and 4h in an independent shop. Ended up to do it myself, 400$ in parts, 3.5h and 6 beers. Super easy until you need to start the engine to top up the oil with a hot exhaust next to the filler. |

LOL didn't even think of that. Appreciate the reply. I ended up calling around and found another BMW indy who said $707 out the door so I booked an appt with them. Thank you!

The mechatronic sleeve is not too hard. It should not add more than 15-20 minutes after a pan drop. It was mainly dirt in a rotating plastic lock ring.
Dropping the valve body is more involved, but the "double-D" seal is known to crack. I replaced that and the four round tube seals. Yes, about 4-5 hours if you include the dropping of the chunk of aluminum. IIRC 10 extra mounting bolts torqued in stages. The double-D in the 6HP19 was still ok. But this is common in older transmissions: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1799415 Last edited by mainbearing; 02-23-2022 at 04:51 PM.. |

Parts are maybe $350, right? Why not spend a few hundred on a big bag of drugs to get the energy and motivation to do the work yourself, and then pocket the difference.

$1100 seems to me... high. I did a 335i a few months ago. Total parts cost (new pan, all new Mechatronic seals, new oil pan, new filter, new bolts, 10 quarts of oil) cost about $400. Working alone in my garage, without a lift, I think it took maybe 3 hours. With a lift, it should be half that.

Yeah $707 seems reasonable but I'm not sure why you wouldn't do this one yourself. If you did coils this should be much easier, though more technical.

Honestly I could do it and was planning to, but I've got too many cars and I'm sick of wrenching right now. I'll take the savings from DIY'ing the coils and use that to pay for this haha. This includes 8 quarts of fluid so I'll probably drive it for a month then do a DIY drain and fill so I've got basically all new fluid.

I apid a shop to do my GM transmission, was combination of laziness and had budgeted money to do it, plus it was winter and my garage was packed with toys and did not want to pull everything out to do job.
I am debating doing this year as it's going to be two years since last one and 35K miles. Would like to keep this transmission alive till I decide whether to do 6 spd swap or daily something else. Too bad the number of DIY style garages has diminished. I use the Auto skills centers at nearby bases when I need a lift but normally it's first come first served and 100 miles away it needs to be a priority and I know I'll get it done that day. |
