I wouldn't use that personally. It'll end up scratching and gouging the oil filter housing. That style is better left to the disposable metal filters. The BMW specific tool only costs around $20 from the dealer and is well worth it.

It WILL work and it DOES scratch. I used that when I found out they changed the size of the filter wrench between the e46 and e92. Since then I've found that the wrench for a P1 Volvo S40 works for the e92 (which I already had in my toolbox because of the g/f).

Autozone has stamped steel wrenches in various sizes. If you can find one that fits I'd guarantee it's even cheaper than going to the stealer.

Don't get that - the cap isn't that tight - I got mine off by hand and you just have to tighten it until the 2 dots align which isn't that hard - best thing to use if you don't want to get the correct tool is just a strap wrench that is just a big rubber band basically and will do no damage and is cheap!

+1, or get one of those cheap rubber gloves to use to grip and tighten by hands

I have always been able to get mine off by using my hands too. I thought I needed the wrench and then tried it with my hands. After that I said forget about buying a wrench. As people have said if you make sure the dots line up when you put it back on you'll be OK.

Use one of those $3 rubber wrenches (oil filter tool) you can buy at Walmart. Its really not that serious.
Or the rubber glove idea works as well.

or you can go down to your nearest auto parts store and purchase a 24mm socket. There, problem solved.

Fine for removing, you really are not putting the correct torque on it though for the reinstall.

Again I will say pay the $14 for the ebay one, it makes taking it on and off very easy and you can use a torque wrench to tighten.

I am just old school but I torque everything to spec, lug nuts everything. Maybe that's why my E46 has close to 200k on it and is in mint running condition.
