Emissions testing - JB4 and MHD Stage 1

2008 E90 N54 - I sold this to my son a year ago and he's trying to get it emissions tested in Chicago. It has a JB4 tuner and a stage 1 MHD tune on it. I reinstalled the cats before I sold it to him. When the emissions station hooked up to the OBDII port the failure says: "Unable to communicate with vehicle's OBD system, commonly a damaged or corroded Data Link Connector(DLC) but could be indication of other problems with OBD..."

Is the JB4 interfering with the emissions testing? The MHD tune?

TIA

Yes, JB4 needs to be disabled. Probably easier to just remove it since you already have MHD stage 1 installed.

Thanks

The JB4 was on Map 1. I had him go to Map 0: JB4 disabled. He's never messed with it, that stuff doesn't interest him. He also doesn't have the expertise to remove the JB4. I appreciate the feedback.

You'll have to remove it yourself or find someone to do it.

If I recall correctly, there's Youtube videos showing how to remove it.

Are you saying I have to remove it to disable it and pass emissions? Or that I have to do it since he cannot? I'm 350 miles away from the car, so me removing it is not an option.

I'm saying if he cannot then you should or someone else should remove it.

He might be able to pass emissions with it in map 0, but if he has MHD stage 1 then the JB4 is redundant, using it only cause further headaches.

JB4 is designed to be used on its own or with backend MHD flashes, not stage 1 MHD tune, which does not require JB4 at all.

Jb4 on 0 should be good enough to pass inspection and allow the car to be scanned. I have a different back end flash that I must remove and replace with the stick flash before going in for inspection because the aftermarket flash prevents my car from achieving readiness.

You don't have to remove the JB4. It can stay on, but it needs to either be disabled or setup for a back end flash like you have.

How did you pass emissions before with the cats off? Some have a circuit installed to change the values and fool the car into thinking emissions are fine without the cats. If that's what you did, you may need to adjust that now that your cats are back on.

I'm in rural Missouri

No emissions testing or inspections here. He's in Chicago suburbs, so different story.
