Imperfection in paint
Hi guys,
Had the car 3 weeks now and have given it a good wash today and found 3 imperfections in the paint I have included pic of the one on the drivers door. There is another on the roof and one above fuel flap. Is it best to just put up with them or get them to fix them. I am just wondering if they would need to do some repaint to sort the problem. What are your thoughts on it? |

Since you found three spots, I'd recommend documenting them (taking photos) and then asking the dealer what can be done to fix this. Was this a new car?

That sucks and with my OCD it would eat at me every day. I wouldn't want the dealership to respray it either being new. You have a tough one, good luck.

Definitely document each instance and take the vehicle to the dealer.
Lots of ways you and the dealer could resolve this. See what they propose as a remedy and go from there. But certainly don't let them push you into accepting a quick fix if you're not 100% comfortable with it. |

There is no reason to respray a panel at all for a minor spec of dust being in the paint. It can be wet sanded out and then polished out again. the only problem with that is when you do the one panel you will have a polished panel and then the rest will have the normal orange peel to them. Every vehicle I have owned has a minor spec or two of dust in the paint, I just leave them be. The repair isnt worth the hassle to me. |

I understand it frustrating to see it daily and especially for a new vehicle but If the dealership decides to fix this issue with body work (respray etc) all they do is use a local body shop close to them for the repair. I would take the imperfection rather then a shop do body work on the brand new car. Factory paint and spec even though sometimes not perfect is still better then a random shop doing work.

I agree. But I feel some painting will be needed. This should have been detected the factory at the QC stage.

Completely normal. Almost every BMW I have had has had some paint impurity like that. Ranging from a e90, G20 and G01. Just how it is at BMW. Hasnt diminished the value when selling for any of the cars either. |

I have only owned 3 BMW’s, but never had any paint imperfections. Certainly not acceptable on any new vehicle.

I would NEVER re-spray a new car unless it was due to a traffic accident. Just have the dealer note it and give you a copy for your records. After that, just ignore them.

I literally just had a hood resprayed on one of my other vehicles, it had at least 6-10 pieces of dust in the paint even with the shop using a paint booth. Shop wet sanded the hood and polished it out, cant tell that any of the dust was in any of the paint. |

An idea
I have completed multiple paint imperfections on my 07 Z4MR's OEM paint using 3M WetorDry 3000 Grit sandpaper; the online tutorials recommend starting with 1500 Grit and I refused and used the 3000 Grit which takes much longer but you have much better control of not burning through the clearcoat; this is followed up by multiple automotive buffer applications of light rubbing compound and then wax; it took a noticeable imperfection and made it disappear. Perhaps one of the solutions is for a highly functioning and acclaimed auto repair center to attempt a similar method.
