anybody here own or previously owned a e39 M5?

i was wondering how they are as far as reliability and cost of ownership. I'd like to own one but im sure most are out of warranty. Any feedback would really be appreciated. Im also thinking of the 03 540i sport.

VANOS failure is somewhat common and an expensive fix, it is not a cheap car to own. Repairs and maintenance are enough to scare me off from buying one to be honest but most will say "if it was taken care of it should be pretty reliable" but meh.

It is an M. It is an M out of warranty. As long as you are not prone to heart attacks when you see a service bill, then it is safe.

That said, they are amazing cars. I've driven a couple for extended periods of time. One of the best sedans ever made.

look for 2-4k on maintenance per year, from what i remember researching. if you are a DIY guy, you can save yourself some money.

i know my friends 03 m5 is constantly in the shop - but he's lucky since his bro is a tech.

Looked into owning one myself a year back but opted not to because of maintenance costs. With the M5 you can expect 3-5k per year strictly to that. I almost bought a 530i after all of my study but opted not to. Great vehicles indeed. I love the E39.

As far as I know from friends, maintenance costs are HIGH.
I would not own an M out of warranty, especially a previous generation.
