Unveiled: Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro
INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi is rolling out an even higher-performance edition of its flagship, the R8 5.2 FSI Quattro, with a 518-horsepower V10, a top speed of 196 mph and a price tag of $180,000. The R8 5.2 adapts the 5.2-liter V10 from the Lamborghini Gallardo, slightly detuned for use in the all-wheel-drive Audi coupe. A nearly identical version of the same engine will power Audi's new $330,000 R8 LMS racing car that's being developed for GT3 events in 2009. In the R8 5.2, the normally aspirated, direct-injection 10-cylinder engine makes 518 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. It can be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or an R tronic sequential automatic with steering-wheel-mounted rocker switches. Audi says the car can zip from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.9 seconds but will return up to 17 mpg in average fuel economy with the R tronic. Both transmissions come with a launch control program for quick starts with electronically controlled tire-slip reduction. The R8 5.2 rides on unique 10-spoke 19-inch wheels, shod with 235/35R-19 rubber in front and 295/30R-19s in the rear. High-performance ceramic brakes with composite discs are optional. Audi has made subtle visual changes to distinguish the V10 variant from the standard eight-cylinder R8. In addition to all-LED headlamps (toight as fuck), the R8 5.2 gets wider side sills, matte aluminum exhaust grilles, a larger rear window, chrome single-frame grille, accented side blades, and front air inlets and front apron lip painted in high-gloss black. Inside Line says: Compared with the new R8 LMS racing car, the R8 5.2 should look like a bargain when it arrives in German showrooms in the spring. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

All-LED headlights ftmfw. That's all I have to say.
This just bumped my love for the R8 up like 518 notches. Lovin' the LP560-esque rear bumper design (with the blacked out midsection), and the wheels don't disappoint in the slightest. This car is going to be a beast. Btw, a claimed 0-60 in less than 3.9s is something to be excited about. What's that? Did you say GTR? Oh wait, no LC...that means you're not gonna be breaking into the sub-4s range. Btw, I don't hate the GTR, I just hate Nissan for pulling the wool over everyone's eyes.

They're sorta aftermarkety looking, but they fit the R8's overall design theme, so imo they work.

Kinda expected more. I thought it would have had wider fenders and different looking bumpers. 0-60 in 3.9 is crazy but not worth 180,000 imo. Id rather have the regular for 120,000

You're getting all LED headlights, (optional) CC brakes, bigger rubber, an amazing engine, more aggressive bumper styling, and launch control that won't void your warranty. It's a bargain version of the LP560 in my eyes. BMW needs to get their shit together and make a competitor asap.

Nice, the first time that I've said that to an R8

When you figure in the markup that will undoubtedly be put on this car, I doubt it will be that much different. And if you can afford a 180k+ car, I'm sure you can afford a 250k one.

GT-R is $80k before mark-up. (~$100k after) This car is $180k before mark-up. (~$200k+ after) Audi R8 4.2 is $120k before mark-up. (~$150-170k after) That's a HUGE price gap. |

It's the people buying $300-400k+ cars like LP640s, SLRs, CGTs, etc etc that couldn't give a flip.

-Fenders are not flared. In fact the F430 hardly has any flared fenders to begin with. -Different bumpers (same concept for the R8) -More aggressive side vents (again, same concept) -Stripes (R8 has different headlights and larger rear glass) -Wheels (yup) -Brakes (yup) -Engine (yup) -Mirrors (silver on the R8)

i dunno...the mags have gotten the GTR 0-60 in 3.9 without LC. for 180k, why not just get the real thing and buy a gallardo?
but the weird thing is the 235 front 295 rear tires. isnt that too wide of a gap? even though its mid engined, since its AWD wouldnt this produce some unwanted understeer? |

I agree it should be styled a little more aggressively, but tons of aftermarket companies offer aesthetic bumpers replacements to make it looks as mean as your old stepfather- while still being a pavement pounding supercar. Best bargain supercar I've ever heard of. (/don't respect Nissan's GTR warranty policy... bitches) -Chris |
