MY2023 - What Can We Expect?

I have my order in for an M40i and am still waiting for an allocation, however I'm thinking about just holding off for MY23 at this point. With the LCI being last year I'm not expecting any major changes, but what sort of changes are a reasonable expectation for 2023?

What would you do? Wait for the 2023 and receive it in presumably September? Or be happy with the 2022 and receive it in likely July?

all changes happen on for 2022 models.
2023 models should have no changes

According to Car and Driver there have been minor changes every year to the X3 (packages, standard features, materials, etc.). Why would the MY23 not receive anything at all?

There will likely be some change for MY23, even though minor because it is not a LCI year. For example I was probably one of the first MY21s and got my M40i in September 2020. That year, they added option for Shadowline package (earlier people were buying black grilles from IND), and removed Mocha from interior color. So very likely you can see a little rearrangement of packages/colors/options. There is also the small chance that something you like will go away. Since there will be no real changes to exterior possibly there will be no advance leaks/chatter to talk about. I would probably wait for MY23 if you are in no rush. Very likely you can order in July.

Every year they have done small changes (Except for the LCI change which was a bit bigger) I would expect to see different interior appointments, and maybe adding and deleting some of the colors

And maybe you'll be able to get passenger lumbar, but I'm not confident.

Less electronic systems as the chip shortage worsens. Headlights will be operated with a flip switch on the dash, with a second switch for high beam. Automatic dipping will be a monthly subscription only option; BMW will supply a person to travel with you to operate the high beam switch. The air con fan will be linked to pedals in the passenger footwell. If you want air con functionality while travelling alone you can open the window. However, if you have the automatic high beam subscription, they will also operate the fan. Wireless charging will be offered as a £250 dealer fit option. Wi-fi will be deleted as they can't get the software to work with the new hardware they shoved in at the last minute.

I assume there will be some small changes are there always are. I don't know what, but some small stuff. I think allocations should be our in June/July for August production.

Does anyone know when ordering for 2022 may be? End of may? June? It’s too bad one never knows the changes for next year model before ordering ends for current year model.

Is there a higher probability that less options would be available due to chip shortage?

June allocation for July production will most likely be the last of the ‘22s.

The chip shortage is expected to last for a number of years. I would doubt things like passenger lumbar and digital key come back anytime soon. If the chip inventory improves I would thing previously deleted options would come back on the lower trim levels.

Get a X3 M if you want everything including wireless charger and passenger lumbar.

X3M is too expensive, worse gas mileage and stiffer ride. These may be minor details but they are a big deal.

Honestly - I think things can only get worse from a chip shortage perspective, so I don't think MY23 will have much if any changes, and if they do, may be removing some things. If the war in Ukraine continues and expands, and China lockdowns continue, chip shortage only going to get worse.

I completely agree. It may be the worst time to buy a new car but that is "as of today". That statement may live on week after week, month after month. A big driver as many have pointed out is the car manufacturers are living high on the hog at the moment. Why would they want the current condition to change?

Those bastards (and the stealers too ???)...

Is that because they know they can charge the same or more for delivering less?

That is, less for more to the buyers?

Will all these crazies end before the next M2 with S58 comes out? I'm so ready to get this behind.

What's better for them... having 10 total cars at the dealer to sell for MSRP and difficulty getting any extras or having 50 to sell at a slight discount and being able to get more when the customer wants them for more sales? I don't know how dealers and commission based salesmen are surviving. It was the same way for gun shops a few years ago. There was no inventory and a lot of the small ones had to close because they couldn't bring in any money via sales.

Agreed, quantity might not be keeping up with demand but the strong demand is driving many dealers to charge 1,000-2,000 over MSRP.

The quarterly earnings report suggests they are not struggling and in fact are thriving.

I'm probably speaking out of turn in regards to commission based staff. I don't know how they are fairing. I'm sure they are feeling the pinch.
