Tesla Charger Adapter — iX

We are about to take delivery of a storm bay iX. We have a Tesla Wall Connector (latest model) mounted on wall of the garage (40 amp). Does anyone know of an adapter so we can use that charger with the iX or do we need two chargers?

I've seen several products like this- some even "compact" (no cable)- https://ev-lectron.com/products/lect...-adapter-white

Google TeslaTap. This is a popular solution as well.

I use the Lectron adapter. Works fine with the iX and anything else that is J1772.

I think there may be some dip-switches in the tesla charger for it to work on a non-tesla. It should work. No need to buy a new wall charger.

There are adapters a plenty for Tesla to J1772.... not a big deal in the US/NA

Why not just replace it with a compatible charger? If it's hardwired, you can easily switch to a ChargePoint 11kw and sell the Tesla one (might take you less than 30 minutes to do the swap).

If it's a NEMA 14-50 plugged Tesla charger, just use the plug that comes with the iX.

If it's a 40amp Tesla charger, isn't the Tesla wall box just covering a NEMA plug anyways?

No - keep the Tesla wall charger and use a J1772 adapter. I have been doing it for years and you gain the load balancing feature if you have more than 1 installed that most other wall chargers lack.

From experience, you don't need to fiddle with the dip swtiches. Those switches will change from J1772 to Tesla mode, but even if in Tesla mode it will change to J1772 mode within seconds of being plugged in. You won't even notice.

I highly recommend using the Tesla High Powered Wall Charger even if you don't have a Tesla

If he had the latest model, there are no dip switches. You'd connect to it via WiFi and change it on your phone from Tesla only to "all cars".

If you're handy you can buy the j1772 cable connector (this is a pre installed handle and wire that you can just attach in place of the Tesla wire, like an appliance whip) and swap it out, just a few screws and no permanent damage, can all be switched back. I can do a step by step if you're interested. The adapter is the most flexible in terms of being able to go from one to the other immediately, though.

You guys w/ the Tesla Connector getting the full 48 amp charging w/ the adapter? It was my understanding that the BMW charger and the ChargePoint options are only 40amp and so you charge about 5-10miles less per hour. I’m in the same boat and thinking of just getting the adapter. Thanks in advance.

You can hardwire the ChargePoint for 48 amps. Not the BMW....

Does anyone have experience with the TeslaTap mini vs TeslaTap regular/original on an iX? Read some articles where the mini had issues physically connecting to some cars (VW in particular) and wanted to check if anyone has actually successfully used the mini on an iX. Looking to get one to keep in the car just in case.

I am in the same boat and am going to get the TeslaTap Mini. Make sure you get one that matches the amps output from the wall charger.

I use the Telsa Tap Mini (80amp) just fine with the iX.

I just changed my Telsa HPWC to a JuiceBox 48 and have 3 spare TeslaTap Mini 80 amps if interested. 2 of them have never been used. PM me if you like.

Thanks!

If anyone is interested I have one more new TeslaTap available for sale. $265 shipped (it's $300 + tax + shipping directly from them).

It's the 80AMP version. Only used once to confirm it is working.

Thanks much
