Highland park IL 4th of July parade shooting
It's crazy that just a month or two ago there was a shooting at a Texas school. Now, there was a shooting at a parade in a city that is 45~ min away from me.
So sad. People can’t enjoy a simple parade without the concern that some evil sob is going to commit an act of terrorism. What is going on in this world? https://chicago.suntimes.com/2022/7/...parade-gunfire

This is about 45 min away from me too. Pretty crazy. Seems they've found the shooter now, but there was a manhunt for quite a while.

Dude lived out back of the house his granddad owned when he died and then the kids dad and uncle took it over. So basically 3 odd dudes living in their dead parents house together. Also his dad ran for mayor and lost.

In most cases, people who commit heinous crimes like this are, indeed, odd dudes. We are at a state in this country where no place is really safe. If I could post all of the internal threat notifications we receive on a daily basis from our own internal bureau and the Feds, it might blow your mind.

Dude, you cant even go to a grocery store anymore without some sort of awareness. I'm not living in fear and I still don't know about getting my CCW but better believe I am not naive of it either
Really sad b/c I don't believe there is truly a way to defend or stop this from happening (and becoming more frequent) |

Since the parents didn't press charges the kid didn't technically have a record despite multiple interactions and even though he was underage to buy the gun his dad covered for him. And his dad could, in theory, be an accomplice because of it. |

[/QUOTE] The other day my husband ran into Academy to grab a few things for the boat. He thought I don't need my CCW. This man at the front of the store starts hollering all these things and was clearly disgruntled. He was also carrying a back pack. This went on for 15 minutes and apparently this guy comes in quite a bit but they said he must not be on his meds. My husband said it's the last time he will just run in without it. He said it was not a good feeling at all to be trapped in the store and he said you could tell a lot of people were very worried. |

Many of these instances have been family members covering up for their "angels". "Not my angel. He never exhibited any signs or tendencies to commit such a crime." If person can't be a decent human being to do their due diligence in getting authorities/help involved, then maybe facing felony charges/jail time will push them to do the right thing. |

The cops did eventually arrive. Much of this is a bit of a blur to me as this happened a few years ago. From what I remember, the same county building was also a place for those having substance abuse problems. I didn't know this prior. And this individual is an addict that was mad he wasn't able to get stuff to help him through his withdrawals. I was able to have a talk to someone in charge of that facility which probably did nothing. I read him the riot act as to the lack of security and how poorly trained his staff was in responding to this type of incident. It all probably fell on deaf ears. |

Mental illness is a huge problem. Without getting political, I think we need to take a step back in our society and look at what causes these situations and not just the tool being used.
I think in an effort to be more accepting of everyone we have blurred the lines between what should be addressed and what should be ignored. My mom works with kids in an elementary school who have behavioral problems. Many of these kids just need discipline and something to work towards so their lives have meaning, but instead everyone is afraid of the parents, and kids that are truly developing violent tendencies are ignored. My mom has had desks thrown at her, windows broken, other kids with broken bones because mommy's little angel didn't want to do school work. There are second graders drawing pictures of running people over with trains, shooting people, etc.

Discipline is a thing of the past in lots of parenting today. My SIL adopted a child that was born drug addicted and has bad behavioral issues. She looks and talks about him like she birthed him. She constantly makes excuses on why he acts the way he does. She refuses to look at the fact he was born drug addicted and both of his parents are addicts. You can not tell him no. He loses his mind. He starts screaming. He will hit my SIL. The rage he has is unlike anything I have seen in any kids I have been around. The kid needs structure. They moved to S FL a few years ago and she hated it at first so she kept him home the first 2 years with her because she didn't want to be alone. The past year he goes to Mother's Day out for 2 hours 2-3 days/week and he's 5. We hope he will grow out of it but we just don't know. He can be loving. His biological brother has issues but the grandparents are raising him and he's been in therapy for the past 2 years and they are very rigid. I guess my point in saying this is we worry about this child growing up. It absolutely baffles me on how someone can think any of this is healthy or normal. Kudos to your Mom for trying to make a difference. I don't envy teachers at all. It's hard work. |

They got a girl who was about 8 months old...she had drug addicts for parents and showed signs of physical abuse. It's been a nightmare raising her as she has severe behavioral issues including uncontrollable rage, no respect for authority, has threatened family teachers, police etc. with weapons (mostly knives), and on and on. It got so bad, that the parents would call the police on her just so child protective services could see that SHE was the antagonist. This family has tried everything - they are disciplining parents, Christians, been very supportive, even spent close to $200K on therapists and an out of state "Behavioral Rehabilitative Retreat". Nothing worked because this poor girl is simply damaged from the first 8 months of her life. Now, she is 18 but hasn't lived at home for the last 1.5 years. She is planning to join the Navy. She never got a grade above a D, and in her final year of high school she had all "Fs" and one "D". But the Navy requires you to be a H.S. graduate, so the high school guidance counselor had a conference with the parents and said (and I quote): "If she NEVER returns to this school again, we will pass her". She didn't have to take one final exam. Furthermore, since she is female and Latino, the Navy has offered her a $20,000 sign on bonus to join. But what chance does this person have with authority? The problem just rolls down the road...as you can see, the system, parenting, mental health help, programs, etc. all failed yet the school passed her, the Navy has accepted her....it's just an issue that keeps getting passed down the line. |
