Tire rotations not needed??!
I had my 2020 X3 xDrive 3.0 in for the second service…basically oil change and cabin air filter. Mileage is just over 11,200 miles. I inquired about tire rotation and the service advisor says “not recommended by BMW and won’t help extend tire wear”. I thought this was just absurd. When I got home I used my tire tread depth micrometer and measured all 4 tires, the stock Bridgestone Alenza on 19” wheels…in a square setup. All 4 tires were fairly close with the rears showing approximately 0.2-0.3mm more wear. Overall average about 6.5mm for inside and center treads and outside tread about 5.5-6.0mm. I’m still inclined to rotate the tires front to back.

Maybe the SA didn't bother to look and just assumed you had a staggered setup.
AFAIK rotating on a square setup should always help extend the tire life. |

After 44k miles I'm still running on the original fronts and with it being a lease car I can't get them changed because the centre 75% is still at 4mm despite the fact that the outer 50mm of the tyre is bald. I keep wondering if the carcass of the tyre will be exposed before it reaches 2mm in the middle. The rears were replaced about 10k miles ago.

I've owned nothing but german cars for the last 27+ years. In both RWD and AWD. I find the tires wear at very similar rates between front and rear (more so in AWD). I've never rotated and found that by the time the rear tires are worn down to replacement tread depth, the front is due to be replaced as well.
The near 50/50 weight balance helps with even wear. |

BMW had some good reasons for this (even with square setups)- and they sort of make sense. From memory...
Moving the tires to new locations can upset the balance of the car - even if for a short period of time and most importantly, the cost to rotate tires on a regular basis will exceed the savings you might get with extended tire life. Here is some more fun stuff https://www.cartalk.com/content/owne...otated%20tires.
