VIN assignment?

When you order a new BMW and can see it on the time line, will they assign a VIN even before production begins, or do you get that info later?

Before production, yes, but will still be a while before that happens.

VIN is assigned at Status 150 "production started" but this is normally two-weeks before they actually start welding a car together. It means all the "Just-in-time" parts for this build are in the process of arriving from the suppliers and the day production is expected to finish is listed. No changes can be made at this status.

Prior to 150 you get an allocation at Status 111 and a production number, and then Status 112 a week of production. At these points changes to your configuration can still be made. Status 112 normally is about two-weeks prior to 150, but it varies.

Wow, this is very helpful for understanding the process. Thank you!
