Talking AWE Tuning G80 M3 G82 M4 Exhaust - Step By Step Install Video + Feedback

We installed the axle back version only, without the resonator delete. This is the most conservative setup offered by AWE-Tuning. It keeps the primary cats in the downpipes, the secondary cats in the midpipe, and one resonator.

It's got a charming exhaust note, but it's too quiet if everything else is stock. We recommend this setup with catless or high-flow catted downpipes or for customers who did a secondary cat bypass.

Next week, we will install the resonator delete, expecting this to open up the sound. We will post a second video once the resonator delete is on.

Currently in the Research and Development phase.
50-state emissions-complaint dual 3" exhaust configuration
Available as valved SwitchPath™ or rowdy Track Edition
AWE's first SwitchPath™ exhaust for BMW to incorporate drone-canceling 180 Technology®
SwitchPath™ retains factory valve controls, no additional remote needed
Fits all factory valence configurations
Optional non-resonated performance mid-pipes are available separately (for AWE Exhausts only)
Track Edition (with mid-pipes) provides a 22 lb weight savings over the stock exhaust.
Bespoke X-pipe unlocks a smooth tone out of the S58
Ball socket mounting points for easy installation
Max gains of 3 hp and 5 lb-ft of torque at the wheels
Quad 4.5" double-walled, slash-cut tips available in chrome silver and diamond black
Less is more: clean, straight-through design maximizes performance
Manufactured in-house at AWE
AWE No CEL Guarantee
AWE Perfect Fitment Guarantee
AWE Lifetime Warranty

09/12 update - AWE resonator delete install

After installing the AWE resonator delete, the exhaust has more volume throughout the RPM range.

The AWE Tuning axle has an exotic tone, which may be one of the car's best exhaust sounds. But it's quiet.
The resonator delete will fix this problem!

The car now sounds more aggressive while keeping the AWE tone. It's a must-do MOD with the AWE axle back; I would never recommend doing the axle back without the resonator delete.

This setup with the AWE axle back and resonator delete is still very conservative. It's a perfect choice for customers looking for a mild increase in sound but a significant upgrade in tone.

For customers that want the AWE sound but a more aggressive sound, I recommend adding catted downpipes to this setup to get the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the ongoing info.

I've always loved the awe sound (my best friend had their exhausts on a couple different Audi's and they sounded deep and fantastic). Was also lucky enough to attend a couple events at their facility with him, and it was always impressive.

I tend toward conservative in volume, so i am interested to hear your take on the car back plus awe miss since I have no desire to mess with the cats. I would think the result would be similar by having one of either the non-res mids OR cat deletes? Having both would almost certainly be too much for my taste.

i recommend you start with the axle back only as i did, if you want more sound, you can add the resonator delete. Its an easy upgrade

Hi Mike,

Can't wait till you install the AWE non res midpipe, I am curious how much louder will it get, will it be as loud as your AA cat back? I am planning on keeping my oem downpipes and want a deeper/louder sound then oem, so looking for midpipe or complete catback if that gives me a better sound. From what I understand the AWE mid retains the cat? Which is a little bummer for me. Will it be louder then your AA xpipe catback (was also looking into AA single catback). However the AWE has a good price also, were as the AA including tips is a little over my budget........

I don't think it will be louder than the active autowerke catback I had on the car.

As you said, the AWE keeps the secondary cats which AA replaces.

Does the AA catback also use the oem valve controller? If so can you add a valve controller (VSC or dahler) to keep valves open?

AA re-uses the stock valve controllers as well.

VSC-2 and Dahler work with both systems

I added the resonator delete last week, which significantly improved the sound. It is a must-do add-on. It sounds almost exotic.

The AWE exhaust with the resonator delete has the best tone in my opinion.

It's still quiet, especially since I have the stock downpipes, and the AWE exhaust keeps the secondary cats.

This system is perfect for customers looking for drastically improved tone but not for overly-aggressive exhaust.

In my opinion, when coupled with downpipes (catless or catted), the sound is perfect. It's got a great tone and will be just as loud as the other systems on the market (the ones that delete the secondary cats).

Video of the resonator delete coming soon

Have you tried it with the OEM DP's and removing the secondary cats > non-res mid (AWE) > SwitchPath (AWE)?

I think it'll sound much better with high-flow catted downpipes.

The AWE system has an almost exotic tone; the catted downpipes will amplify the sound without the rasp. You get the best of both worlds.

I'm not too sure, but REMUS do not offer secondary cat replacement in the US

I could really go for that more exotic sound, I can't wait to hear what this sounds like, this could very well be the path I take. So if I am following you Mike, this setup keeps Primary and Secondary cats OEM and then replaces everything after the secondary cat including both resonators?

Mike, what are your thoughts on the differences between these 3 options.

1. AWE exhaust with resonator delete
2. PSI Midpipe only
3. Secondary cat and first resonator delete with straight piping

Would the psi midpipe work with the awe axle back? Then there would be no resonators.

AWE exhaust with resonator sounds the best out of these three options, I recommend you add catted downpipes for the full sound.

Are the burbles still there? Didn't hear them in the open valve rev. Is it because you kept it on dynamic mode vs sport + and used the valve controller to open valves instead?

Thanks for posting the video Mike it sounds very good. I think this is the best solution for those wanting to keep OEM cats. Just to confirm, you have the OEM down pipes and Cats and that is the sound we are hearing in the video?
