What was the biggest thing you killed and how did you feel about it?

I don't go hunting or like to randomly kill things so I guess my list may be small?

I lived in a place where I knew a mouse was running around so I set those sticky paper traps all over the place. One night I heard some screaming so obviously it was caught on it. Before just tossing it into the garbage, I thought I gotta give it a quick death instead of letting it languish there for days or weeks, so I folded the paper and just squished it w my foot. Even those it was vermin I kinda felt bad, but it was necessary, what else can I do?

(Maybe a bit bigger than that mouse) I felt more bad about this frog that wandered onto our property when my brother and I were playing around as kids. I was just joking around w a brick holding it overhead pretending to squash it but I was never intending to harm it. Sadly, my stupid butterfingers gave way, it slipped and the poor thing was hurt pretty bad. I then made the decision to put it out of its misery. It wasn't a good feeling, felt quite bad and sad for the frog, regretted my stupidity for a while.

Hit a dog at 90mph in my 300ZX ages ago. Downtown, 3 lanes of traffic, only car on the road at night, literally improbable but the pupper darted right out in front of me with no chance to even flinch on my part.

Couldn't get the sound out of my head for weeks

I did that. He ran across the street and I went right over him. Small suburban street and had no chance of swerving to miss him. I slammed on my brakes, but it was too late.

I stayed there with him while a neighbor called Animal Control. He was bleeding from his mouth and his rectum. He died before they came. A German Shepherd. Felt terrible and will never forget.

There was a big storm the night before and maybe the fence where he lived blew down and he got scared and ran away. Poor pup.

I've slaughtered animals, used to do 25 rabbits a week. Pigs are tough, they squeal loud if you don't get it right.

10 point white tail buck. Field dressed 214lb, not including the heart, liver and kidneys. And yes I consumed all the meat. That was years ago and I haven't hunted in a long time. I do miss a good deer steak now and then.

I can't believe I forgot about the raccoon, I tried to swerve but so did it right into me again. I guess it didn't affect me as much since it was purely an accident and I didn't see the carcass but there was some fur left in my mangled bumper. Poor thing still.

Appreciate reading your stories. Man, the dog ones are tough.

I think I only had venison once but it was incredible. Too bad I haven't found another place that serves it.

Other than mice in traps and the like, I'm pretty sure I killed some ducklings on the road in 2010: Driving at 70 mph on a two lane road in central Oregon and come upon mama duck leading a line of ducklings across the road. No time to stop but I slammed on the brakes and hit the line at perhaps 30 mph. Looked in the rearview mirror and saw a chaotic line of ducklings. I'm pretty sure some didn't make it. I felt awful.

Wtf? You didn't humanely kill them first?

Shot a deer with my Uncle in a tree stand when I was 15. Fantastic jerky. Good clean shot. 4 pt buck.

Jack Rabbit in Utah near Zion. 80mph down a loan highway and WHACK! My Subaru STI's front lip decapitated him and what a mess that was to clean up. It was all over. It was not pretty.

I once ran over a squirrel that did the Crazy Ivan thing in the middle of the road when I was 16. I felt terrible. Another time a dog ran out into the road and I couldn't avoid hitting it. That really affected me badly.

The only living creatures that I dispose of now are Bofu frogs. If you don't know about them, they secrete a poison that dogs tend to lick which is fatally toxic to dogs. So whenever I see one in my backyard I put a .177 pellet into the head and throw it into the street for another predator to eat. Otherwise I don't harm any other living creatures besides insects.

I find it interesting how we value certain animals but not others. Not saying it's wrong or right I kill a ton of bugs, just something I think about when squishing an ant for no apparent reason.

As for me I can't recall ever hitting anything on the road bigger than maybe a bird or lizard. So it's probably the hog I shot last year. I felt kinda bad, mainly because the place my friend took us for the "hunt" ended up being more like a petting zoo than an actual hunt. He was tasty nonetheless.

Funny you mentioned this as just yesterday my wife told me to kill some beetle and I was thinking if I should trap it in some container and relocate it outside, then laziness set in. Ya, unless it's something disgusting like a cockroach or fly or mosquito, I feel a bit bad even though it's 'just an insect'.

I'll kill any insect, especially a Palmetto bug. Have you ever heard a 10yr old daughter and 50yr old wife scream when they see one? LOL.

I do capture and release the baby lizards I find in my house. Unless my Mini Schnauzer gets to it first.
