I don't know about "best", but definitely the most unique dining experiences I've ever had was Alinea in Chicago. I'd recommend going there at least once for the experience alone. Not sure how to really describe what we experienced... just that it was very different...

Lunch at The Fat Duck in Bray (UK), probably about 15 years ago when the tasting menu included things like Snail Porridge and Egg and Bacon Ice Cream. A very memorable experience, but once done, no reason to repeat.

Three stand out for me.
Geranium in Copenhagen which is exquisite and was a bucket list item for my wife and I. At the time I think it was ranked about the third best restaurant in the world. The second is Nobelhart and Schmutzig in Berlin. Beautiful locally sourced food cooked very well with great staff. The third was Maude in LA which is owned by a great Aussie chef Curtis Stone. He invited us back into the kitchen and it was a great night. There are many others we’ve been lucky enough to go to, the three of us a very much into great food. |

Late March 1972 aboard USS Wahoo (SS 565), a Diesel-electric submarine in the Western Pacific heading for Yokusuka, Japan. The normal fare was OK but nothing spectacular but this night (the last night before reaching the base) was superb: Prime rib with all the trimmings and a complimentary glass of red wine for each sailor (Note that alcohol was prohibited on U.S. Navy vessels but Diesel boat sailors did things differently!) The only glitch was that we were snorkeling in rough seas; every time that a wave reached the sensor at the top of the snorkel mast, a valve would close and both intake and exhaust from the atmosphere would cease momentarily. Accordingly one's ears would pop as the pressure in the boat suddenly dropped due to the big Diesel engines pulling air from inside the boat and simultaneously, a cloud of black Diesel exhaust would rush into the small submarine dining facility from the nearby engine room. Kind of like eating an excellent meal while breathing exhaust smoke two feet from the back of a city bus. Definitely a memorable meal!
And to keep it on-topic, I remember it as the best prime rib ever, although that may be because it was such a relief from the peanut butter and cold cuts, etc.

Les Tantes Jeanne in Paris, took my wife here for our anniversary and spared no expense. 7 course meal with Kobe beef and wine pairings. Also really enjoyed our first anniversary at 58 Eiffel in Paris. First time I've had lamb that wasn't too gamey for my taste and a beautiful view.

Probably the best dinners I've had are from an assortment of locally owned places in Italy.

Have been to many amazing restaurants, but DiverXO in Madrid is at the top of my list.
A few notable mentions: girl and the goat in Chicago. Dishoom in London is amazing. Jungsik in NYC, same. Did eleven Madison Park a few years back, and we left profoundly disappointed. Just was not worth the hype. |

Anyway, generally-speaking many fancy places are super-overrated imho, I've been to virtually all the fancy restos in HK, I'd take a hearty bowl of pho vs many of them. They tend to verge too much being artsy instead of hearty and actually being satisfying.

It's actually not a banana... it's chocolate made to look like a banana. I guess that's the trick? Either way it was delicious.

I think mine would be Daniel in NYC of famed Daniel Boulud. Ended up sitting next to Howard Stern. Just an overall great experience

Some random place we walked into while staying on Taormina, Sicily. The meal moved me to tears.

One of the most memorable was a small family owned place in Sorrento Italy. It was on a side street behind our AirBNB. Small, all locals and OUTSTANDING food. We ate there 3 times that week and when the owner saw us leaving on our last morning there, he ran out to give us a bottle of his private labeled wine as a gift.

Went on a trip to eastern Canada and rented an Airbnb in May. On the way to and from the place we passed this unassuming restaurant with an apartment above, the seating area looked tiny, maybe 5 or 6 tables. Noticed they only do reservations, makes sense for how small the place is, so we called and they were booked for the rest of our stay. Oh well..
The next month the Michelin guide was released for Canada and it was in the top 10. |

We've been fortunate to have enjoyed many fine meals....but if I had to tell you about one experience that stood out, it would be our dinner at Victoria & Alberts in the Grand Floridian in Disney World.
It wasn't simply the price that set it apart, it was the room, decor, the harpist playing in the corner, the personalized menus, presentation, etc. The last amazing meal was actually aboard the Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas - the Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine dinner. Not only was the decor amazing, but the food was presented to resemble things in real life, like a bird's nest that is edible for example. It was really cool! |

Years ago, 2010. Whatever the fancy steakhouse is in the Bellagio that puts you at water level. Outstanding meal. I'm wanting to say even back then it was about a $500 tab with tip.
There is place in here in OKC called VAST. It sits on the 49th and 50th floors of the Devon Tower downtown. Great food, great service, wonderful ambiance. 2014 in Manhattan, did a tasting menu at one Mario Battali's restaurants over by the meat packing district, IIRC. |
