A quick google search will bring you many results on the typical issues and costs associated with the E53 X5. The 3.0L is your better bet as the V8 is a lot more problematic, but the I6 can still have serious cooling system issues that can kill the car. Other than that, the typical BMW issues relate to cheap plastics, s****y window regulators, consistent oil leaks, etc. At 250k I'd be curious of ownership history, as well as what has and what hasn't been replaced.

Its a high milage BMW from the early 2000's, so it won't be all roses.

This is spot on. Proper maintenance is key and you can't slack on it or it would snowball on you really quick. I've own my 2004 with a 3.0 since new, but it only clicked past 151k mile. I've replaced the expansion tank, waterpump, Tstat, and hoses every 8 years or so like clockwork and never had a cooling issue. Just replaced the radiator end of last year as it developed a pinhole leak - not too shabby after 18 years!

Make sure the oil pan gasket has been replaced at that mileage. It's guaranty to leak and it's a major PITA to replace as the front subframe and drive shafts have to be pulled to replace that stupid gasket!
