LCI general electrical gremlins and software issues thread

Not sure if there's a general thread created for random electrical gremlins or similar issues for the LCI model. I saw a couple people had check engine lights come on. I figured we can consolidate everything into one thread to get a sense of what sorts of issues people see popping up, especially with iDrive8 being relatively new.

I ran into my first little gremlin this morning on my way home after dropping my daughter off to school. The car randomly threw up a "Component Protection" error with the message "Used, not activated components detected. Some functions may be reduced. Have the problem checked by your service center". No other information was given, but playing around a bit I noticed the controls on the right side of my steering wheel (volume buttons, phone button, BMW assistant button) were no longer working. After a few miles the message went away and the controls began working again.

Not sure what caused it, but if it comes back at all may take a trip to the dealer.

Foreward Collision Mitigation limited

Well, I'll add mine from Day 2. Sitting in driveway, and I get a warning that Driver Assistance is not available. The detail stated the Forward Collision Mitigation. Braking may not occur in the case of imminent collision.

Mysteriously the warning is disappeared after a few restarts, just an hour or so later.

I will update if anything after I drive it again.

The more your report this to your SA "even if it disappears", the better the chance that a TSB may be released later to address any of these issues if it's serious. That's one way of how BMW get informed.

Makes one wonder who writes these meaningless error messages. "Used not activated components detected" would seem to baffle even a BMW service tech. I'm sure this is perfectly clear to the dweeb who wrote it, but he/she clearly didn't realize that the rest of us didn't hear the rest of what he/she was thinking.

Maybe it's lost in translation German to English

Nah. You would be surprised how many times the phrases we write as software engineers make perfect sense in our minds but are complete nonsense when read without context. That's why we need people like technical writers to babysit us for everything we write that is end user facing.

So my Forward collision warning was automagically received by my dealer. They wanted to have a look, taking it in Wed/9-14-22 for their assessment

Love the car talks to the dealer!

this is a known issue, a full key reset and alot of times it will go away. It has either to with the seatbelt sensor failing or the sensor in the seat it what I was told.

It's annoying and shouldn't be happening in a car this expensive. Typical BMW quality and their software is poorly written.

The driver assist issue just hit me today. I did a hard iDrive reset but it didn't go away. Will see if it goes away by this afternoon.

I read a post on a Tesla forum that said that manual reset doesn't fix most error messages issues. However, if the car goes into a full sleep mode even for 20 to 30 minutes...after it restarts...it will fully reset...error messages will disappear and everything will go back to normal.
I'm not sure if "full sleep mode" can be forced/induced?!

Well the car's been sitting in the garage most of the day, I guess I'll take a look when I head out to pick up my daughter.

I also received the email that my dealer's been made aware of the error code and that I should take it in. But if the error code resets I'm not sure what they'll check. Hopefully Debbill can report back on their experience taking it in to the dealer.

Does the car automatically go into full sleep mode if it's not driven for a while?

From my understanding yes after a while it'll turn off completely. I'm fully expecting the driving assistance warnings to disappear when I go out again, just wondering if I should still take it into the dealer or if they will be helpless without any fault codes beyond the initial notification.

I think if the error message is genuine and there is a real problem...even if it disappears...it will reappear again. However, if it's simply a glitch...then it shouldn't reappear again. I'm just guessing!

My money's on glitch. This is iDrive8's initial year afterall. I remember when iDrive7 first came out some 3-4 years ago... it was glitch city.

Then it shouldn't reappear again...if it does...maybe all it needs is a software update. Keep us posted...

Here's the detail. This cause doesn't match what happened with at least two of us. We were both sitting static, no movement. After service I drove less than 20 miles and had it show up again for at least a few minutes, though I was able to restart it some 10 minutes later with no more faults.
