420L cargo box installed

Was a little nervous about the size being too long for the X3 but I think it's perfect.

Getting ready for the first road trip

Trying out the xpel temporary trac wrap on the front as well

Make sure to keep the total vehicle height in mind, should you decide to enter a covered parking garage!

Looks great. BTW if I'm not wrong they are 3 options - 320, 420 & 520 liters for the cargo boxes. Any specific reason why you choose the 420? Also can you please share the total height to the top of the box right now? Since like one comment above mentioned, I'm also interested if I would have issues in garages

320L for me was big enough. No wind noise that I noticed which was a bonus.

On a similar height suv, we had issues with some car park height barriers when on vacation in the UK, so be careful.

I’m think of using a tow bar mounted cargo box 420l if I need extra space. Easier to access, no height issues, and doesn’t block the pano.

We had a beach holiday last month, so a couple of body boards, 4 beach chairs, beach parasol and a collapsible 4 wheel beach cart. I’d have never fitted it all in the boot.

My thing was I wanted to fit a couple of suitcases. I didn't go the hitch route because we have a dog that will go in and out the back gate on long road trips. the 520 was a 11 inches longer which I think will have too much of a hangover on the x3. if you look at my picture, thats as far back as I can go with the rear gate at 100% open. I do wish the 420L was 6 inches wider like the 520L, but the length had me nervous.

It BARLEY didnt clear my garage and I mean barley. My truck fits which is a 2500 sitting on a 2 inch lift with 35s. The bmw is taller. I will try to get a close measurement on total height but do know the 420L and 520L are the same height. I feel if the BMW roof rails weren't so high it would potentially fit. if I had to guess, its just under 7'2"

Thule wingbars might buy you an inch or two.
I have a similar size (non-OEM) box and cleared the BC ferry 7ft height restriction with a couple inches to spare. You can get them in black which is a bonus.

Do either of you that own the 420L box know if it will fit 4 pairs of skis that may be 180cm long? I can't find the internal dimensions. Thanks.

I'd also like to be able to put some other stuff in there if there is extra room after placing the ski's inside but it's not the main issue.

Did you end up fitting the 4 180cm skis in the 420L roof box? I’m trying to do the same and don’t want to spend the extra money if it’s not needed and I like the size of the 420L for fit on the car. Thanks!
