X7 - Sunroof cracked ....

While I was driving back from the office and noticed my sunroof was cracked (almost shattered). This is not the big sunroof glass, but the small glass panel which is before the large sunroof glass. Picture attached. taking this to the dealer to check. I'm puzzled with what would have caused it

Does there appear to be any point of impact, or did they glass just fracture? Sometimes glass components are designed to be load bearing elements in body design, and incorrect installation can stress them in a way that induces failure.

I checked the glass and it didn't have any impact point . The glass had crack running along the black border all for sides and didn't originate from a single point.

No I didn't tint the glass. It looks like tinted because of the shade inside garage

That shop is giving you BS. Most Tesla owners have their sun roof tinted way darker than 70% and you don't hear of them cracking.

I've always had sun roof tinted, usually with 5% limo dark tint. This time I went with 35% because I didn't want to block out the led lights.

I know lots of people with tinted roofs, and never over 30+ years has anyone had one crack.

My sunroof is tinted as well for the past 2+ years of ownership without issue. The sunroof on my previous SUV of many years was tinted also, with no problems. That whole shattering sunroof due to tint "thing" has pretty much been debunked as an urban legend/wives tale. The issue posted by the OP looks like it is most likely a glass manufacturing defect or installation error unfortunately.

What is the science behind tint and sunroof integrity? I just want to know as I just tinted my roof 70 percent last month.

Mine cracked on my 2019. Dumped glass all over my wife and I. Sounded like a gun shot when it broke. We were simply driving down a regular road. Bmw replaced it as "Good will". Otherwise it would be an insurance claim.

There isn't really science behind it, usual line is that the tint traps the heat in the glass which causes thermal stress and the glass shatters. It's been a thing since as far back as I remember, my tinter is one of the best in the tristate, but until recently he wouldn't do anything more than llumar air 80. It's an urban legend that alot of the old school tinters stick by.

My guess would be back in the day MAYBE when they would cut the tint on the glass they would sometimes score the glass without realizing and that would be a stress riser which would cause the glass to shatter under thermal stress. Nowadays the tint is cut on a plotter off the glass so even that chance is eliminated.

I had all 3 panes tinted in xpel xr prime plus 70% for the heat rejection and also in case it shatters to prevent the glass from raining down.

Oh no. Sorry to hear this, man. Happened to my X7 on my road trip home from PCD. Read my X7 PCD journal, somewhere around page 7 or so, in New Mexico.

Glad you both are ok … Did you have sunroof lights? Mine is 2020 and it had skylights and I think it was holding the shattered glass without falling on us

It happens after 2 years of ownership and glad didn't happen during our long trips

Yeah, we were fine. Little chunks of glass, and dust everywhere, but the whole thing didn't fall at once. We were out of town though. So, I used a blanket we had in the car, put it underneath and knocked out the rest. Luckily I always carry a roll of duct tape in a bag along with a plug tire kit, pump and a few tools. We stopped at a department store and I found some cardboard next to the dumpster. Lol. Made a temporary cardboard sunroof, stopped at a carwash and vacuumed it out. Continued about our day like nothing happened. 😀

It did not have the skylights, but I don't think that is what's holding yours together. The skylight option is simply etchings or printed dots in the glass. The light is led's on each side shining across.

And yours is more than cracked. Lol. It is shattered all over, but like a puzzle the pieces themselves are holding everything together I think. I did have to push and pry the pieces from around the edges in big chunks even though I could see the chunks were lots of smaller pieces.

The same thing happened to us as well. Sounded like a gun went off. We took it to the dealer and they are asking $8K to fix it.

We have the whole thing on the dash cam too. Did you guys go through the insurance or did the warranty cover the repair?

I wonder why the insurance would say no to something like that? If you were driving, is it possible that something hit the sunroof, and if so, wouldn't that warrant a legitimate insurance coverage?
BMW is cheap and will do all they can to decline coverage under warranty. BMW corporate is not a Mercedes when it gets to retaining clients and am talking from experience. Dealer to dealer might be different, but BMA-NA to MB-USA certainly there is no comparison.

My windshield on the 530e developed a crack while in the sun. Dealer analyzed the glass to see there were no impact points and subsequently BMW replaced under warranty. There can be manufacturing defects in the glass lamination process which can lead to heat stress and thus cracks (I tend to think that dark tint causing cracks is not an urban legend but possibly true).

I will suggest NOT to break off and remove glass in case the dealer wants to inspect to make sure there are no impact points.
