Exhaust Value Control

When I start the car it appears that the valves are open, ie. Green light on, on the button.

Any idea why this is and how do I default back to off?

I really think that button just controls the active sound (fake exhaust noise) in the car. You can code that to be default off. You can also set your M1 or M2 buttons up to have that turned off.

So the button being illuminated from start is normal?

Yes, as is the actual exhaust noise level. The valves are actually closed. If you do a cold start in sport plus, you can hear what is sounds like with the valves open.

Wait, so the exhaust button in the center console only controls the artificial sound? It doesn't do anything to the actual valves in the exhaust in the different drive modes?

On my 2020 - the button allows you to close the valves when you are in sport/sport plus. It does not quiet the exhaust on cold start. Not sure if that changed for LCI.

Not sure it does anything with artificial sound.

On my LCI comp it changes the interior sound coming through the stereo system. I haven't noticed any difference in actual valve control. I messed with it quite a bit.

The button does two different things. It can turn the ASD on or off, and also enables the “variable” exhaust flap. I would look at it as loud vs quiet mode. Wanna be discreet or get attention/feel the rush of RPMs revving.

Variable is the key word. Most people don’t realize the performance exhaust isn’t on/off… it’s variable from 0-100% when it’s enabled. The button simply enables the flap, how open it is, depends on how hard your hit the throttle.

This is how proper exotic cars behave. Ever heard a ferarri drive by, and as the drives accelerates suddenly it gets REALLY loud… it’s more dynamic and creates less drone during low demand.

The car does default to it on, but it is an M. Just push the button to turn it off. It’s really the second ever BMW to have a proper exhaust button after the M5.. enjoy it.

The exhaust button in the LCI is what turns on burbles in sport/sport+ mode it may increase the burbles on the ASD as well but it doesnt do anything else I confirmed that in testing.
