Exclamation Motion sickness on the X7

Is it just the nature of the car or does anyone get motion sickness on the X7?

Even when driving around town and on a straight line highway, I get a huge amount of bounciness/head toss/floatiness from the car.

Enough to get me and my passenger motion sick.

Anyone else experienced the same issue?
Is there anything you can do to help with the issue?
The newer 2023/lci version of the car seems to get the same issue.
Fyi, I don't get this kind of issue on equivalent class of cars (Mercedes GLS, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, etc)

You can see the issues noted here:

I've never experienced this with either of the X7's I've owned. Maybe try putting the car in sport mode to tighten up the suspension.

i havent noticed this either. the roads i drive on regularly are pretty poor. also went on a trip yesterday to a drive through apple orchard, fast winding roads going there and very uneven rocky ground (rutted paths through the orchard), the X7 handled it like a champ.
i'm coming from an X3 M40i and i am routinely shocked at how this car is both plush and handles well.
I did option DHP.

Some people are sensitive to the isolation of air suspension. This “floaty” feeling is eliminated with the optional DHP package.

There definitely is a lot of wallowing in my pre-LCI, non-DHP X7. My kids get motion sick more easily in this car than any others we had/have and there is a lot of head toss experienced by the passengers in the front. Putting it into sport mode helps. We rented a 2022 Yukon Denali recently and that exhibited much less wallowing on the highway.

Does your car have DHP? It removes a lot of the floatiness.

This has come up on the forum in the past and mostly seems to happen in comfort mode. Sport mode tightens it up a lot. I generally ride in comfort but manually lower the suspension one setting each time. One of my kids, and myself for that matter, are very prone to motion sickness and this seems to help. Keeping the sunroof shade open and lots of air moving in the cabin helps her too.

I had this feeling in my previous GLS that did not have the equivalent of the dynamic handling package (DHP). My X7 has the DHP package, and it isolates the bounciness/floatiness of the vehicle really well. No issues here with X7 - DHP.

Another reason for why the DHP is a must have on the X7. Never ever would consider one without DHP.

No, it does not have the DHP.

The issue with dynamic handling package (DHP) was that it is very hard to find.
Most car listings (on carguru, autotrader, etc) do not list the option as a filter.

On newer models, I believe it is only available on M50/M60.

Which also defeats the purpose of looking for a more comfortable ride (instead of adding additional sports options that I don't need).

Manually lower the suspension one setting helps a bit (thanks DSTJ99 !), but still in no way as stable as any other SUVs I driven, unfortunately.

I have driven several SUVs and X7 had firmer rides among them. Even when compared to X5 45e during my test rides.

Few factors that we can look are:
What tires are you on?
Also where is the passenger seated thats vulnerable to motion sickness?
Is that passenger watching a gadget or reading a book during the ride?

Recently I had to haul bunch of kids for a birthday party and a 7 year old kid with motion sickness was one of them. Her parents cautioned me about her motion sickness and I kept a throw-up bag handy just in case. We went on a 10 mile ride on few twisty roads, and kid never complained. I am on 22 inch performance wheels, with captain chairs and I drove on eco pro mode that day. No DHP.

When you first get in the car and start the engine, immediately hit the Sport button. This will lower the air suspension to its lowest point reducing the center of gravity. It will also simultaneously turn off auto stop/start which can cause jerkiness at every stop sign and traffic light.

As drivers, we also have to change our style in an X7. It's a very large, very heavy SUV. It's not a 3 Series. Anticipate breaking at longer distances. Respect speed limits on highway ramps. Dial down the spirited nature you might push in other types of vehicles.

Lastly, Captains Chairs eliminates nausea in the 3rd Row as it provides a clear sightline to the front windshield. For little ones back there behind the Bench Seat, it's like the great wall of China.

The secret sauce for motion sickness and an ideal comfortable ride:
1. DHP
2. 21 inch wheels with the right air pressure
3. Drive on eco-pro mode

One of my wife’s past Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit had air ride and she experienced a bit of this floaty nausea on a long trip and going to the firmest ride helped her a lot. That Jeep had what is typical air suspension as on most luxury SUV’s without any handling tools and would be considered very isolated and floaty. Very much like bobbing on water.
My X7M50i with DHP is in another zip code of isolation and ride handling. There is no wallowing in corners or floating as if on a boat.

I was having the same issue with my new 2023 LCI X7, stupid me that I didn't get DHP as at the time of my ordering the online configurator was not up and my sales guy didn't tell me either. As the last message, the correct tire pressure and either driving in eco-pro or comfort are far better than driving in sport. in sport mode even driving on highways the second-row passengers get a feel as if riding on a cobblestones highway. The first time my son sat in the 2nd row he was motion sick.

I am researching swapping the front sway bar, I believe the m-sport or the m50i had a slightly thicker front sway bar for cars without DHP. cannot find the part numbers for 23 LCI, but did find the pre-LCI x7 part numbers:
hopefully, they are the same for LCI.

31-35-6-873-973 is for 40i without m-sport
31-35-6-877-829 is for m-sport or for m50i

My kids would get motion sickness when looking at their iPad while the car was in motion. They learned to put it down every few minutes and look out the windows.

Man, I love this forum!!! Super useful and people are very engaging especially on the X7 forum. I can’t believe I spent almost 3 years on another forum/website not knowing about this one! Reason I found it was that I accidentally came across a post here while searching google about charging issue for my 530e! Was surprised how quickly people responds here!

Can the DHP be ordered outside of M60i? I don't even see that option at all on the configurator.

There is quite a bit of conflicting just in this thread.
Some say sports mode helps with the motion sickness, while others say eco pro/comfort mode helps more ...

try driving another car at dealership and see if you have the same issue. That way first you will know if the problem is limited to your car or not.

I don't think anyone's suggestion will 100% be applicable for you. Everyone is just sharing their views and experiences.

There could be several trigger points from person to person for motion sickness. It can range from perfume in the car to driving conditions.

Best way is to try another car at dealership and see if that is any different.

at present, DHP is only available for M60i due to parts shortage. But don't think about getting it before you test it out.

It is interesting how much conflicting information there is on this topic. I've read the complete opposite that DHP with rear steering actually worsens the motion sickness due to the extra "wagging". We've never experienced motion sickness in either of our X7's (x40i and M50i) and that is with several more sensitive passengers. This includes multiple 900+ mile, 12 hour straight through trips with kids on their iPads/phones. I will say that we had Captains Chairs in both though. If the "floatiness" is contributing, as others have said, maybe use the sportier suspension modes or even consider some aftermarket suspension mods like lowering and stiffening.
Lastly, my wife and I both feel like the BMW drives and handles better than her previous Mercedes GLS and current Audi Q8 so I guess you really just have to drive a bunch before you buy and not take anyone's opinion as they're all vastly different.

Is "Executive Drive Pro" the same as the dynamic handling package?

How can you tell if the car has it on https://mdecoder.com/ ?

I'm just curious of the people who's occupants are feeling motion sickness, are you driving normally? Do you consider yourselves aggressive drivers? Are you constantly accelerating and taking fast corners? Not judging but It is a BMW so I have to ask. Thanks.
