As well as checking coolant levels frequently. My 19' 330i would still consume coolant on faster than average vehicles. Same thing for my 22' M340i.

No mods on a 4 cylinder will improve reliability. Regular maintenance is just the key.

^^ regular oil, filter (oil & air) changes. Change ignition coils and spark plugs a bit before recommended.... and has been said... don't mod. no wheel spacers, no boost, no nothing. just drive it. I DO like to make sure mine is up to temp (water, oil, and Trans) before I get on it. That might help as well.
