X3M in the Snow?
Looking to get into an X3M soon.
90% of the time I will be on the road, but I would like to take it on occasional trips to the mountains for ski trips camping etc. How does it do in those types of conditions? Tires matter of course. I was thinking of the Michelin Pilot AS 4. Anyone run these tires year round?

I have only had my X3M for a month but we had some snow and I took it up in the mountains too. I have a set of dedicated snow tires and it was very planted and confident. Not a worry in the world. I have driven in snow for many years though and know how not to drive in it. I had a GLA 45 for a while and had some Conti DWS AS tires on it. It was ok but there is a big difference between as and winter tires when you are in snow. If it is just cold, as should be 100% fine as long as you don't floor it everywhere and expect to have the traction like when its warm.

I have the A/S...no good up here during the winter months, mostly due to very low temps. I drive to our cottage in Québec at least once a month and we get a tremendous amount of snow up there. I have Blizzaks...

I ran the Michelin Pilot Spots AS4 last year and they seemed fine in PA. Im really not enjoying them during spirited driving. I had them SCREAMING in a right hand corner yesterday. I might have to buy another set of wheels and run summers with a stiffer sidewall.

Ask about the western part of PA to get a better perspective. I grew up in NW PA (Erie), and now live just west of the mountains in SW PA. That said, my X3 M40i goes through winter roads very well. If I add winter tires, it would likely tackle all but the worst snow-covered roads. |

To really maximize the performance of the car I think it's worthwhile to have a dedicated winter set. I've done the same on the last several cars because a quality winter tire makes a significant difference in the snow.
I don't have an X3M yet but have had RS3s, Golf Rs, STIs, even daily'ed a Mustang GT year round for a bit. For something AWD that isn't being used a hardcore track car a performance oriented all season has better wear characteristics than a really sticky tire and gets you most of the way there, then dedicated winter tires for a few months a year. I live in the Northeast though and it isn't unusual for me to drive during big storms. |

I have a 2018 X3 30i which I just purchased so no snow driving just yet. I have a 2011 335xi sedan and had a 2005 X3. As long as you have snows, these cars remain planted! I was actually surprised how good they are with snows. I have had people wiping out all around me one winter on the hwy, the X3 did not move! I believe you will experience the same!

How do the tires handle in the dry conditions? Still feel like a performance tire? I was surprised to hear Corvette was using the As4 as their standard tire for the car.

Winter wheels and tires are a must. I have them for both my X3M and M2. The X3M is new this year, so I have not tried it in the snow. I have driven the M2 in the snow with winter wheels/tires and it is perfectly fine.

I have winter tire package - 20" 255/45R20 square Pirelli Scorpion Winters. They are "performance" winter tires vs. snow tires, which means they are better on the highway than Blizzaks.
On snow and ice, they do great. Bear in mind, you will still slip and slide a bit - the best winter tires give you good grip, but not nearly the levels of a summer tire on hot tarmac. I've run the AS3+ tires numerous winters (though not on the X3M). They are fine in cold/wet and cold/dry, but on snow and ice they suck. |

See this video to have your questions answered. In general, they always say for cold climates a dedicated winter setup is the best option. However, it seems technology is advancing, and the AS4 is a good alternative for those that don't have the space/money for a separate set.

It all depends on how much snow we are talking about. Snow tires are highly recommended if you live in a place that gets a lot of snow or they don't plow the roads right away or have a very steep driveway etc. Running summer tires during even a light snow storm is just stupid, period.
I am running MP AS4s and been happy with AS3s for the past 9 winters on my previous Audi S4. We'll see how they perform on the X3MC this winter which is more rear biased vs the Audi and much heavier. Braking in snow will require more distance for sure. I should be able to manage few inches to a foot of snow around Northern NJ. I drove RWD cars with AS tires when I was younger in snow(carry a 50lbs kitty litter bag and a shovel in the trunk ) . I drive to local ski slopes in Catskills NY area and VT during winter and roads are cleared by plows during the storm. Speed limit drops to 35mph on the NYS Thruway anyway during heavy snow storms so AS4s are good until 50mph range before car starts to slide.

I am looking forward to driving the X4MC equipped w sottozero 3's this winter. As soon as the temps dipped below 40 degrees last month the performance tires were like driving on rock hard plastic.
I drive hard in the minnesota snow and travel long distances to ski in all parts of the country. I've had good luck even with an F06 650ix as long as it had snow tires, simply because the biggest issue for tires in my part of the country is temperature. At -10 and below, all season tires just get too hard to grab traction. To that end, for basic winter driving the temperature is the biggest issue.... Then its clearance, if the road's not plowed and you have 14 inches of new snow even our heavy Range Rover isn't going anywhere. Last edited by Mnfamilyguy2020; 11-09-2022 at 08:11 AM.. |
