Grain of salt needed - BMW ranks third in Consumer Reports Reliability
https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...s-a7824554938/
The current 3 and 4 series cars are at the top of their breakdown. Reliability surveys are bit silly in general, but it's still surprising to see BMW this far up. Ranking: Toyota – 72 points Lexus – 72 points BMW – 65 points Mazda – 65 points Honda – 62 points Audi – 60 points Subaru – 59 points Acura – 57 points Kia – 54 points Lincoln – 54 points Buick – 54 points Genesis – 52 points Hyundai – 46 points Volvo – 45 points Ram – 42 points Cadillac – 42 points Ford – 41 points Tesla – 40 points Chevrolet – 40 points GMC – 36 points Volkswagen – 31 points Jeep – 30 points Mercedes – 26 points |

BMW past around 2015 or as we transitioned into the mid cycle F series and definitely the G series has been quite a reliable brand given the type of car it is... I think same with Audi.
In the Mid 2000s and early 2010s... if your Audi broke, you'd have to sell your house to fix it... and dont' even get me started on BMWs and the random bing you'd hear everytime you'd start the car.... it's hard to even put BMW and Toyota in the same ranking because the cars are that much different... Toyota is a simpleton point a to b car... BMW is a luxury performance car that has a large amount of tech.

Wait until CR begins including iDrive8 models in their rankings... BMW will drop like a rock
![]() Other thing I'll mention is - CR reliability rankings can be skewed wildly by availability of data points. Case in point - Mercedes is dead last on this list. But if you dig a little deeper, the aggregate reliability for Mercedes is represented by only 2 models in the lineup - the E class and GLE. So it wouldn't matter if the rest of Mercedes 10+ cars in their lineup had bullet-proof reliability, CR is aggregating their overall reliability through only 2 cars.

Yeah but Mercedes has been pumping out unreliable stuff for a long time now and don't have a bullet-proof reliable model. Had they included more models it's not likely they fare a lot better and possibly even worse.

Be as that may, I was highlighting the shortcomings in how the rankings are calculated. Mercedes was just an example I used since they're dead last.

People need to remember that these rankings are derived from subjective owner satisfaction ratings and not objective data.

i believe BMW has some reliable for the past 10 years unless you absolutely beat the *hit out of them but i would of thought mercedes would of been a little bit futher up the list at least the top tier. like top 5? But i take this with a grain of salt because i believe BMW is like top tier #1 for luxury sedans.

What I do believe wholeheartedly from this ranking is where Mercedes sits. Everybody I know with a Merc has had issue after issue. The outgoing C-class/GLC are especially turds.

One of my close friends who has Mercedes hit a pot hole and the tire has ruptured. The mechanic showed up without impact wrench. He couldn't even unscrew the wheel. It was bolted well. While it is an expensive car, every detail seems cheaply built and the whole thing looks like a large black coffin. So, I am not surprised that Mercedes hits the rock bottom.

F8x cars are incredibly reliable. In over 5 years of ownership I've had nothing but very minor issues. I think they're not only the best looking cars BMW has ever made, but the most reliable as well.

No. Not at all. People that say they are BS are usually ones unhappy that the brand they love didn't fare well. No difference than when a car wins a comparison in a magazine when fans of the loser cars say the magazine was paid by the manufacturer. The reality is that CR and JD Power surveys is all we have to go by when it comes to reliability and in the case of JD Power automakers actually pay them for their services so they can research what they can do better to improve their vehicles.

My experiences with some of the cars in the last 5 years reflect pretty closely to that list except for Chevy. My Corvette and Silverado were very reliable and I've yet to see one of the Camaros that my track crew races with have reliability issues unrelated to mods. One of them had an issue with the rear trunk not opening with the key fob but it may have been related to other things.
My last 9 (I think) bimmers have all been superb with only one issue on the new X5 where the center console touch buttons stopped working. The only BMW I ever had serious problems with was an early fourth gen 745. I personally think very highly of BMW in terms of reliability so I get confused when people say they aren't. They are 100% the most reliable manufacturer right now out of the big German brands (excluding Porsche - not real experience to judge on this). |

If you look at the rankings this is CR owners and very few of their subscribers own BMW.
Hell, Benz was last and only 2 models were reviewed.

Not sure about this whole lost but OK. Someone already pointed out that Mercedes at the bottom doesn't make a lot of sense. BMW near the top is OK with my. Honda and Subaru are near the top and that seems about right. How are Toyota and Subaru that far apart some of them are essentially the same car now.
