Where do you source your steak?

What I really meant is "meat" in general, but I'd likely get trolled for that title.

Nearest store?

Local Butcher?

Local Farm?

Online order?

I am beginning to question my local grocery stores quality. Other option is fresh market, but their options are limited and likely not a much better.

FL... Walmart, Costco, Sams depends on the meat. My gf orders from this Wild Fork place sometimes, it's been alright. In NC there is a local wagyu beef ranch that has a store close to the house. I try to get most stuff from there. Other stuff like pork or what not we typically get at Sams since theres no Costco nearby and the local grocery stores don't have much of a selection.

Costco! Thank you for the reminder - heard all good things about Costco meat! We are headed to NC the day after Christmas - the meat there is noticeably better - will stock up I think.

Farmers Market. I started last week lol. They have a few local farms that come and had a great detailed convo about how they feed and move their animals. We had the breakfast sausage this week and it was so good. It was light for a sausage and not overly greasy. I don’t even like sausage and I really enjoyed this one.

Local rancher. Outstanding stuff, slightly cheaper than supermarket pricing right now, which is out of control.

Yes - especially when the quality is lacking, definitely overpriced.

I source Costco for my grilling/larger cooks as well.

The big boss loves 5 Mary farms. You can really tell a difference. Cool farm and story as well.

*I have no affiliation btw.

Happy holidays! B.

All of the above! I get a half cow from a local farm every year. Special occasion cuts from local butcher, just picked up a 3 rib roast for Christmas to dry age. Everything else from the grocery store's butcher.

What's your process for dry aging?

I have tried Costco, Fresh Market, Whole Foods, Pat La Frieda and various other online order providers, but always come back to Allen Brothers online order. Super expensive but we don’t eat that much steak at home and enjoy it as an indulgence. We’ll be having some for Christmas Eve.

Wrap the steak in cheese cloth and stick in the back of the fridge for 3-5 days, change the cloth half way through.

My go to is the local butcher, but hes not so local so 2nd choice is Fresh Market, then Whole Foods b/c I dont feel the extra cost is noticeable from Fresh Market and Publix would be in a pinch or just regular needs

I used to buy Prime meats at Costco, but I don't need that much because I'm the only one who eats steak most of the time. I've started buying bone in Rib Roasts at Publix and cutting them down myself. An entire one that I can get three steaks out of it only around $21, whereas one that is already cut is $18 per steak. When I'm in the mood for a really good Wagyu A5 I go to a place called Easy Meats in Boca. Amazing selection and not too bad on prices. I like their Australian meats. There is a Wild Fork store near me but I haven't gone in yet. And lastly, believe it or not, fucking Walmart Premium Ribeye steaks are really good. Walmart Neighborhood also sells some type of USA "Wagyu" steaks that aren't bad that I'll make for my son.

Since you are local… have you ever tried Okeechobee Prime Meats? Restaurant is great but never tried their meat market.

I have not - but it's funny you should ask - I grew up with a steady supply of meat from my families business located there. Not sure why that supply ended.

My wife has been getting stuff from Good Ranchers and Cooks Venture. Online gigs that have been okay - we cook 95% of the time, so we go through the stuff.

We're considering getting a cow or two. So maybe straight from the source here soon enough.

No I have not. Maybe if I ever get north of Boynton Beach Blvd I'll stop in.

Oh and I’ll add my dad was a butcher. Owned a 1-man shop at the end of his career, from the ‘60s to late ‘70s. Appeared in Sunset Magazine a couple of times, and was also in the national news when he opened, because he also ran an art gallery out of his shop, which was quite successful.

Ordered bison, elk, venison, thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll keep using fresh market for steaks and just eat less of it while eating other game instead.
