Market adjustment ?

Contacted a dealer about 2 hours away about an X1 that has all the features that I'm looking for. They are charging $2500 above MRSP for
"market adjustment". Is this common practice these days?

I shopped for the X1, Mini Countryman & Clubman and Volvo XC40; all were priced @ MSRP with no MRA. But it totally depends on your area. If there are no other BMW dealers in your vicinity, they may be able to get away with it.

But when shopping for a car for my son last summer, the Kia, Honda and Mazda dealers around me were all doing it. Kia was the worst.

There are multiple dealers closer to me. My local dealer has allocations and I can order one for MRSP. Plus I'm not desperate, but was curious if everyone is doing this.

absolutely NOT. call another BMW dealer. My friend lives in Connecticut and she ordered her X1 from a BMW dealer in Virginia.

It is currently common practice in Australia to try sell above MSRP but its mostly for vehicles available at the dealership and not cars you have to order and wait for to get built. It is kind of a tax for getting a car quickly due to stock shortages and delays caused by COVID. The second hand car market has also gone bonkers cause people don't want to wait on new cars.

Shop around, I'm sure you can find ones for MSRP at least and maybe even with a discount on MSRP like many on these forums have.

although... $2500 above MSRP isn't that bad.

my local Toyota dealers are still asking $7000 to $12000 above MSRP for the new Sequoia.

It's criminal. Honestly who needs a vehicle badly enough to pay over MSRP, much less $7/$12k over...on an already overpriced vehicle (4runner...I've owned 2 and that vehicle isn't worth $60kCAD...so definitely not worth $72kCAD)

In any case, MSRP or 1 to 1.5% below on the X1. It's doable but would require major shopping around. Call around the country! Have it shipped. Peeps do it all the time

well... criminal is when the Honda dealers are charging USD$25,000 above MSRP for the Honda Civic Type-R. (also somewhat criminal when Honda is charging $43,000 MSRP for a fancy Civic) But who am I to judge? I once paid $20,000 for a violin bow.(which is just a long piece of wood) Sold it 8 years later for $30,000.

If a dimwit is willing to pay that for a civic, then they deserve the $1,000 a month payment as a penalty. And of course, so long as they're dimwitted enough to pay over MSRP then dealers will continue to fleece you

That Honda Civic Type R is worth it at MSRP though. Dealers here are charging $20K markup on a $23K MSRP Ford Maverick that you have to wait over a year for if you order it! $43K for a mini econo truck is ludicrous.

My previous vehicle was the fancy civic. Was able to sell it for 6k over what I paid for it 2 years later.

don't get me wrong! I love Civics, fancy or not. Learned to drive in a very old vintage Civic when I was 12 years old(my parents figured that it was better that I learned early, real early)... then I lost my virginity in a Civic in high school.... 10 years after that, I fell hopeless in love for real for the first time in my life in a Civic... but also broke up in a Civic... so I have a thing for Civics. (but strangely, I have never owned a Civic, or a Honda, for that matter)

Anyway, back to the original topic, the BMW dealer here is the only one in the state. They could charge anything they wanted on their new cars and we'd just have to take it. Surprisingly, they don't markup their cars, and actually gave me a discount AND gave me free 3 year interior protection and exterior ceramic coat. So definitely shop around.

I think it's more due to the fact the Mercedes is right across the street and Lexus is a block down the road lol. Easier to talk to for sure, the sales staff are generally friendly. I've been to a few dealerships here where the salespeople were less than knowledgeable AND they were jerks or scumbags. (VW, Mazda, and Honda I'm looking at you!)

I have personal experience with two borderline scumbag BMW dealerships in the Washington, DC area. They are so bad that I won't even refer them to my worst enemy. But I also know a super nice BMW dealer in the area(BMW of Fairfax) Strangely, all three within a 20-mile radius.

Sorry - that's not criminal. Anyone willing to pay that for a Civic gets what they deserve.

Porsche dealer here charging 30K to 50K over MSRP. That’s a bargain compared to the civic!

If only one day I could afford a 998 Turbo. I'm honestly interested in seeing manufacturers move more towards online sales that cut out the dealer negotiating process. Ford is doing it for their electric cars soon, gonna be interesting to see the Ford dealers here get screwed over since they're all price gouging the crap out of all their vehicles. 100% markup is absolutely ridiculous.

couldn't agree with you more.

when my friend bought her Tesla Model 3, she said it was the best buying experience ever. Check the color, wheel option, financing... took no more than 15 minutes. waited 2 and half months.. the car was delivered right to her driveway. Effortless and no need to deal with stupid car salespeople.
