L mode with no auto shut-off

Many drivers have complained about the auto shut-off feature and the lack of a physical button to disable it. Well, here is a way to do it.

The X1 has abandoning the traditional automatic shift knob and its standard positions (R/N/D/L1/L2 and OD) and moved on to driving modes and a shifter with no P; but there is a D and L mode.
Pushing the knob alternates between D and L.

One advantage of going to L mode is that it provides a one button alternative to cancel the auto shut off feature; because when in L mode the X1 will not shutoff. So while driving in stop and go you can, with one button, cancel auto shut-off feature. The L mode stays in lower gears for a little longer but you can easily alternate between L and D to get the desired driving experience.

When in L you also get to see what gear the X1 is in while driving (L1/L2/L3 etc) but there is no way to change the gears (unless you have M-Sport pkg)

You know how to put the gearshift lever in Drive, right? So, put it in Drive, but pull on it one more time, and it goes to Low. Pull on it one more time, and it goes back to Drive.

The engine will rev higher in L for sure, but there's nothing to support it uses more fuel. No different from my vehicle...I drive in Sport+ 100% of the time, which keeps the rev quite high. There's no change in my fuel consumption.

I assume that's what you're referring to...feel free to correct that assumption

Well, that's part of the story.
How about the other half?

You asked how to put in L mode; I answered. That's the whole story.

Not for my car, if I pull the shifter a second time it goes into sport mode, no L mode for me.

Maybe it's different on MSport models?

Indeed it is. "S" mode rather than "L" mode on M Sport trim levels.

Also, to me defeating stop/start is really a safety concern for you and your passengers/family; especially in stop and go traffic and other driving situations where you stop or slow down significantly and need to accelerate away. Any insignificant fuel savings is just not worth it.

Personally , we got this "gas" vehicle only due to our intended usage model that required long drives (driving to see our kids in colleges), perhaps will go with an electric vehicle for our next car.
I am expecting many more good choices to become available in next few years and availability/prices will also stabilize.

I would consider an electric vehicle, but unfortunately my condo building is old and doesn’t have any chargers or outlets in the garage. There are a few tenants in my building that have Teslas, but they spend hours at the mall every day charging their vehicle which is a waste of time for me. I heavily considered getting a Toyota Mirai, as the lease rates are attractive and you get 3 years of hydrogen fuel for free, but the dealership is a bit inconvenient to get to and they close at 6.

I just created a shortcut to the main menu pull-down area. It takes less than 2 seconds to turn it off when I get in the SUV. No biggie.

I sometimes drive my friend's 2022 330i when he borrows my SUV to haul stuff. I like the car.. I mean, what's not to like about the peppy and fun 330i? Unfortunately, I never like how its engine atuo idle stop and start worked. Frequently when light change from red to green, the car does not move when I depress gas pedal all the way down, until about half a second after the pedal is all the way down. People behind me sometimes honk at me but there's nothing I can do if the car engine doesn't kick in and move. Now I learned a trick, which is to keep my eyes on the light from either side for when they change from red to yellow to green. When I see their side is at yellow, I start pressing gas and that allowed engine to get a head start so I can start moving when it changes red to green on my direction.
