Question How Does Cross Weld Titanium W/ Stainless Steel

how does JIC manage to weld titanium to stainless steel on some of their exhausts? it would be like stainless steel muffler with titanium tips.

im curious b/c i thought these two couldn't be welded together...??

my understanding was that you can not weld titanium to stainless steel also, but i just read that you can if the alloys are shielded from air either in a vacuum or in an enclosure containing an inert gas. hope that helps

until recently you couldn't even weld titanium to titanium without doing it in a vacuum. but apparently there is a new kind of welder that releases an additional gas that surrounds the welding tip, preventing oxygen in the air to interact with the titanium during the welding process. now whether this also allows titanium to be welded to another metal, i don't know.

that being said, i have a JIC cat-back & mid-section exhaust that is full titanium, not titanium and stainless steel. then again, it is a Japanese application (not for a BMW). i didn't think you could weld stainless to titanium either, but i don't know that for a fact. also, perhaps the titanium tips aren't welded to the muffler. maybe the muffler has small stainless tips coming off of it that the titanium tips are fastened (but not welded) to. i don't know...

Can't you just weld them together using a TIG weld?
You can also use SS filler with TIG welding.

this has been mentioned, but I wanted to add to it as well... I have seen alot of Japanese exhausts that are SS with Titanium tips. Like HKS for example, the tips are held on with fasteners and aren't welded. Some people even take them off if they go to certain places due to fear of theft.

Can they be welded? I don't know. But I don't think they usually are, if ever.

TIG - Tungsten Inert Gas welder. Uses a stream of argon to surround the weld and protect the molten metal from oxidation in air. Not sure of SS to Ti though. I wouldn't have thought that possible.

that's exactly the point i was getting at - i'm not so sure people actually weld titanium tips to non-titanium mufflers/canisters/pipes. they are often fastened by some other means.

on that note, there are a few exhausts for the 335i that have titanium tips, but are not full titanium exhaust systems - someone just needs to search for them and find out how the titanium tips are integrated into the exhaust.

understood, but TIG welding is old technology - the welding technology i referred to is new (as it just debuted at RPI this year), even if the method - a stream of inert gas - is old. they promoted the product as though this is the first time one can weld titanium outside a vacuum. in other words, if the stream of argon gas created by a TIG welder were sufficient, i don't think someone would just now be introducing a welder that allows one to weld titanium outside a vacuum. but i'm not a welder, so i could be wrong...

btw, i love your avatar - i have a red short-haired mini at home.

if you look here for example it says the titanium tip is welded to stainless steel, http://cross-na.com/ViewProduct.aspx...5&CarMakeID=14

i see what you mean...your best bet is to email JIC and inquire about it, unless someone chimes in here first with some first hand experience.

it is interesting how they are doing this. it must be something they derived in Korea (where JIC is actually made), the company KIC does a lot of things. http://www.kiccoltd.co.kr/ and seem to have pretty good technology.
