Facelift (LCI) is due 2024 and production continues until 2027 as far as I heard. What comes after 2027, I don't know but with the new EU law (basically forbidding IC engines after 2035), I think that it is highly possible that the next M3 will be a hybrid...or fully electric.
Looking at BMWs speed in moving forward with EVs, I think it is highly possible that the next M3 is going to be...electric.

It also can't be excluded that BMW will produce cars with an IC engine for non-EU markets like the US or China but I'm not sure about that.

Next gen could be a hybrid turbo 4, then electric next.

I think the all electric m3/m4 platform will be developed to be an ev whereas the i4 m50 is not.

Unrelated…

Tesla and BMW are rumored to partner and build a small SUV. Supposed to compete with VW ID3

I don’t see BMW making a mistake like Merc did with the turbo 4 hybrid.

At a bare minimum the next M3/4 will be a hybrid of some sorts but I’m leaning more towards them going full electric. Especially given their teaser trailer a few months ago for a fully electric full M model.

Doesn't surprise me. I always assumed this was the last ICE Only M3.

Hopefully it will be all electric. I’m not a big fan of hybrids.

Curious, why are you not a fan? I kind of think hybrids are the way to go until the electric infrastructure is where it needs to be in order to support everyone going in that direction. Kind of a stopgap. Is it the complexity of having to deal with both an ICE and EV drivetrain, kind of like the madness that is the AMG C63 S? This is the main concern of mine, but I think they definitely have a place in the line up.

Yeah, complexity of both drivetrains. One main advantage of EVs is less complexity and lower maintenance. I don’t get that if I also have an ICE.

My stopgap is holding on to my ICE until charging infrastructure is ready. Actually my stopgap is holding on to one ICE. We are a two car family, I’d happily get one EV now. We can take the ICE if we go on a long car trip (which is rare).

This is just my opinion, I respect others that like hybrids. I’m actually excited about the rumored quad motor EV powertrain in the next gen. I’d get that in a heartbeat. I’d get another ICE M3/M4 too. Just not a hybrid.

Me too.

Like i actually thought of, although very briefly lol, to lease an I4 M50 once my G80 lease is up.

But then i forgot how inferior it is to the tesla, at least regarding actual EV metrics. (not talking about build quality or luxury features).

If BMW can make an insane EV M3 that will be faster than the I4 M50, then that will definitely gain my interest.

The I4 M50 isn't even build on an EV platform. It's an after thought. I know BMW can make that so much better.

Good idea for them to partner with tesla. They know who runs the game

A hybrid is a good transition into the inevitable. I think they should do it.

Although i know BMW would go all out if they went straight to EV.

But if they electrified the S58 in the next gen M3/M4 for one last hurrah before EV, that will definitely be a beast too.

Imagine the 503hp plus electric motors making 600-610hp for the M3? I think they could do it since the G90 will be making 700+ with the V8 + electric assist.

Either platform they will sell out no problem. But for the ICE fans out there, at least hope they do the S58 + electric assist for the last run before all electric.

I’m not opposed to them doing a hybrid, so long as they don’t pull a Merc on us. I agree that it would be a good transition but I really do think they’d make a killer full EV M and it would likely be the first EV to actually pique my interest.

Although I’m heavily considering the next gen M5 so long as they bring the Touring model to the US so there is that too in my specific case.

I agree. As long as the g90 competition isn’t some outrageous 140k starting price then that’s the one I really want after this g80 lease.

If they keep it at 120 or 125 or whatever the f90 comp goes for, that’s what I’m going for.

If not, I’ll see what the next installment on the m3 is. And if both don’t interest me, then maybe I’ll just keep some ordinary bmw as a part time daily/errand car like an X3 4cyl or something lol and look elsewhere for my additional toy.

If the new M5 is a hybrid with 700+ HP like the rumors suggest, I would imagine a $125-130k starting price. I would think the Touring will start at $140-145k.

Interestingly, I just read an article on C&D that mentioned the next gen M5 will only be offered as a “Label Red” version which will match the higher performance XM setup. Disappointing to see that they may actually be ditching the Competition namesake and switching to a Johnny Walker labeling of performance.

Highly doubt the next gen M3/4 would be fully electric. I think it's going to be hybrid and then fully electric for 2035, coinciding with EU's ban of ICE.

My new 2023 M3 arrives in a month. I should get back on the list in a couple years for a final 2027 ICE M3 and then plan to keep that one as long as possible.

Next M2/3/4 will be hybrid inline-6.
BMW is going to continue to make I6 and V8 engines for another decade at least, but they are going to be super-efficient/clean.

Got this info from an interview with a BMW Exec (in German) from about a year ago... but I can't find it for reference. This is from memory. BMW is saying that hybrid is the best way to go for the next decade. I can't disagree with that.

With BMW extending the production timeline of G80 and G82 platforms, this isnt a surprise.

Even though i dont prefer hybrids, i think BMW is going to take that route until the EV infrastructure improves. A full blown M EV might also have overlap within their model range. Hopefully they dont create another hybrid with a 4 cylinder like the AMGs.
