What bank do you use?
I am looking to transition away from Bank of America / Merrill Edge.
I've been with B of A since 2005 and am now unhappy for a variety of reasons. - Hold times are insane if I need anything. And yes, I am preferred rewards and it still doesn't matter. - The website sucks and is outdated. Feels like I'm stuck in the 90's and I don't like the color scheme. I'm looking for primary excellent website design and excellent customer service. It's my understanding that unless you are Diamond with B of A (>$10M balance) you are treated like cattle call. |

Other than an account at a local bank for access to safe deposit boxes, everything is at Morgan Stanley.

I won't say which bank I use but the general recurring pattern of shady banks in the news is with B of A and worst of all Wells... so stay miles away from those.
Cap One and Chase are very good on the CC side... for personal banking stick to a CU

PNC, for the last 13 years. But we moved and there is no branch within 50 miles (or more). Free ATMs, and most of what we do is online, but we may get a local bank.
Several years ago I saw their CEO speak, and he said they are working toward one branch per zip code area in areas where they have branches. Apparently they just aren’t needed. I have a USAA account but really don’t use it except if needed to pay them. Good service etc. Not sure I love their app for banking, haven’t really used it much so I don’t know yet. I won’t use brokerage banking because of the cyber risk (get access to my checking and worm your way to my real money). Separation is the best defense. |

I dislike BoA and SunTrust, I have been pleased with Regions for the past couple of years. Am I showing my age when I say that banks used to pursue your business and try to please you? As I’ve been known to ask, what direction does the money flow?

I echo the rec for credit unions. I have a tiny account at USAA Bank, but basically I don't do banks.

I had personal and small business accounts with SunTrust for over 20 years and they really screwed up the transition to Truist. I switched to Wells Fargo and they have been great so far. Main reason for picking Wells is simplicity of setting up new accounts and bill paying via Quicken, proximity of local branch to home and where we shop, Saturday hours in that branch, branches everywhere, low requirements for no fee banking and higher limit for deposits via phone without going in (most client payments are via ACH but every once in a while I get a check). With online banking and electronic payments, it is rare we need to go into the bank, but having the branch close by and with Saturday hours is good to have.

BoA has the worst interest rates and even for platinum customers they do not provide much benefit, they want to lock you into CDs and get you into their high comm inv accts. They are one of the highest leveraged banks, if another financial crisis happens they will be the first to go belly up. CU's are good, always had one since the 90s. But Capital One online pays a really good savings rate, kids with 20k combined earn more a month than BoA acct with 200k. Was originally ING Orange customer way back and CO bought the business long time ago. There are free ATMs all over the place, currently free to me for CO is a USAA ATM at Smiths.

It depends what you want though. A lot of people say local credit union... they might be great if you want to go to the bank or talk to someone on the phone. However when I have used credit unions (mostly for loans) their websites have been some of the worst ever. You basically HAD to go in or call to get anything done. Maybe that has changed, but I haven't had a bank account with a CU in a long time.
I have used most big banks at some point. I'm all about the online and app experience though. If I HAVE to go in or call they have already failed IMO. I find the best online and app experiences for me have been Chase and Capital one. I've only used Capital One for a credit card, but I love their site and app. Chase can seem very overwhelming and it kind of feels like they have shit everywhere, but you can do almost anything. I can't remember the last time I had to go into an actual branch or call anyone. |

When I met my wife she had Chase. She added me onto her accounts after marriage.
Chase tried to destroy our marriage, I kid you not. Since I had Fridays off, I took our youngest son in to get a teen account when he started getting checks for birthdays and from GPa for doing work. I introduced him to the wonders of applying for an account, the whole 2.5 hours worth. Come to find out, since *I* (co-owner of wife's account) opened the teen account under her umbrella of accounts, *SHE* (the primary account holder) could not see our son's account. WTF??? A few weeks back, since there is another account SHE opened for an older son before she met me, she wanted to try to force them to grant me access, and vice versa. We walked into one branch, and the account specialist wouldn't talk to us without an appointment. OK, there's another new branch a few exits closer to home. Stop in there, same story. "Can we make an appointment?" Sure, our next available is in 2+ weeks. During the interim, my youngest son had finally received his first 1/2 stipend from THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA for 10G. He deposited the check, and they put a 10-day hold. Then they started contacting him saying *HE* had to verify the check, and get the bank a phone number for someone to verify the check. WTF again. So he uses his amazing (not) Google skillz and gets a number. The bank fails to confirm the check within the 10-day period and CLOSE HIS ACCOUNT. Luckily, kid already has a CU account we helped him set up on his own to buy a car. Chase sent him a check for the balance in his account, INCLUDING the 10G deposit, that he took to the CU. Wife/I are considering getting a single account to handle our new real estate investment/family trust accounting. I'm having a very difficult time with her idea that Chase is the place to go. My first wife was a Citi employee, so I have always had free everything there, even after she removed her own access to my account. She no longer works there, but still free everything. Simply because the ex worked there, current wife won't consider using them for the RE/trust banking. I guess we are back to the CU for everything. . .
