Rear Wiper

Morning. Any X1 owners worked out how to lift the rear wiper? It would normally fold out but seems to have a bit of resistance and I’m afraid to apply more force!

From what I can tell, the wiper doesn’t have the ability to fold out. Couldn’t find anything in the manual either.

Likewise, I'd like to know this too! Not mentioned in the manual either!

I don't think the rear wiper arm is hinged at all, unfortunately.

There is a bit of latitude in the rubber mounts for the spindle that allows the blade to be lifted away from the window by a few mm for cleaning/replacement of the blade but that is it.

First wash today, noticed this, and came here to figure out what was going on. Weird that it isn’t hinged.

Same here, doesn't seem to lift at all, or is there a hidden trick?

You can buy a replacement blade for about $15 or so and change it yourself, though I imagine with not being able to pivot the arm away from the glass it’s a bit more difficult compared to other cars.

Just tried it, it’s not too bad. That little lever kind of digs into your finger though.

On a related note, is there a procedure of setting the front wipers blades to the service or fold out position? I know on previous models it was possible using certain steps from the wiper lever.

The rear wiper not folding out is crap.

For the front, the owners manual says to hold down the wiper control lever until the wipers stop at a vertical position (pg 161).

Ignition on to drive ready state but not engine turned on, then hold the wiper stalk down till the wipers sweep a few times then stop in the 12:00 position.

when I lived in DMV, there was a very good automatic car wash near BMW of Fairfax.

just before you enter the wash tunnel, the attendant ALWAYS lift the rear wiper and place a long plastic bag over the rear wiper. (obviously only on SUVs or BMW wagons that had rear wipers) Never did understand how it was supposed to protect the rear wiper during the car wash.

I wonder if any of you peeps who have car wash places that do the same. If so, I get the feeling that someone's rear wiper can be damaged by the attendant who doesn't know that the current X1 rear wiper cannot be lifted.

The car wash cloth on a mitter curtain can easily get caught in the rear wiper. To mitigate this, car wash employees add a plastic cover on the rear windshield wiper of every SUV, hatchback, and minivan that enters the wash tunnel.Aug

This is great, thanks! We been getting a lot of snow lately and I was really surprised and a little mad that I wasn't able to lift the blades to keep them from freezing to the glass.

but that car wash was touchless(no brush or wash cloths)... which was why I was confused...

Doesn't lift.......a big PITA when you live in a winter climate and trying to clear the snow off to find the wiper is frozen to the back window

I find that the wiper itself sux. It's not curved so much of the wiper itself is off of the glass and it doesn't really do a good job clearing the window.
