I know Norton sucks but I have to admit Norton Antivirus 2009 has exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. It totally takes up so little resources and is not bloated unlike the previous ones. I monitor my resources closely on things I install on my PC. Having used bitdefender before, it consumes even less that that!

FWIW I am an IT consultant and come across quite a few different AV programs daily. My personal fav has been Nod32 for about the past 5 years. Very light weight and rarely bothers you with anything but the most extreme problems, which for me is nice.
That being said, Norton (Symantec) and McAfee have always been beast and do more harm than good. When Symantec rolled out Norton 360 they tried to do a complete software re-write to help cut down on this widely known problem. It didn't quite work out as they had planned and 360 was still a bit of a beast. I have since tested and actually work daily with some PCs that have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed on them, and Symantec finally got something right. I typically only deal with Symantec's corporate side of software at work and this side has been good for awhile, but Norton Internet Security 2009 is the first Symantec consumer product that I would actually recommend to friends and family. Overall, yes Symantec has make a good product finally with Norton Internet Security 2009, but still Nod 32 FTMFW! Edit: BTW - Norton Internet Security can be had for $30-$50 if you catch it on sale and the license is good for three computers. NOD32 is around $30-$40 for one computer.

If you are careful and not retarded about what you download and then run. A comman tactic now is to name viruses the same name as popular software programs and music so that people will download them and run it without thinking. If you use common sense you should be ok, but still use caution.
Is PirateBay still up? I haven't seen much of them since they got raided by police awhile ago.

The simple answer is no, torrents downloaded from untrusted sources are not safe. The longer answer is that the thepiratebay.org itself is relatively safe because the thepiratebay.org doesn't actually host any content. The torrents they track on the other hand are not safe. When you download a torrent's contents, you are *not* downloading it from thepiratebay.org, but rather from other people such as yourself who are downloading and seeding the torrent. Someone published the torrent you're downloading, and you probably can't trust that person or their md5sums. Approach software downloaded via the bittorrent (or any other) protocol from untrusted sources with extreme caution. |

piratebay is safe if you know how to be safe on it. that means read the comments on every torrent. if you see people shouting VIRUS etc. it's probably a good idea not to download that torrent. other than that, this computer i'm typing to you on is entirely run off software downloaded from piratebay, and it runs great with no errors of virii!

While this is generally true, and 95%+ (a guess) of the time a person who exercises caution will be fine, it still doesn't make downloading files from untrusted sources safe. You really can't be sure if a file or files haven't been modified unless you have trusted, verifiable check sums to compare the files with. Since a torrent's publisher is usually the same person who includes the check sums in the torrent description they might as well not even bother. Depending on the feedback for a particular torrent really doesn't amount to security at all, although if you see complaints you should certainly not download or install the contents of that torrent. Hypothetically speaking, if you really don't want to pay for software, the safest method is usually to find a genuine copy of the software, rip an ISO of it and then use thepiratebay.org (or other methods) to download either an appropriate keygen utility, or an actual activation code for the product. Cracks and binary patches should also be viewed with a high level of suspicion. Brute force cracks, although time consuming and crude are the often the safest method. Again speaking hypothetically, if you download a such a keygen utility I'd even recommend running that inside a VM or on a box with no personal information on it, and preferably no network connectivity then reinstall the machine immediately afterward. The exception to this of course is software that isn't precompiled. If you can download a product or crack and build it from source, you of course have the ability to audit the source code to insure it includes no malicious code. Of course, to do that requires a certain level of proficiency as a programmer. |
