DME Compatability
Hi, I was hoping someone could shed some light on a question I'm finding difficult to answer. I have a 22 x3 m40i, and would like to buy a second DME to have married to the car/ tuned for an ethanol blend. Because of travel, I don't always have ethanol available, and with the lack of a flex fuel kit for these cars, this seems the way to go. That being said, do the DME's work across all years of the same model? If I bought a 2020 DME, could I have it programmed to work on my 2022? I appreciate the insight on this.

Well, before talking about the compatibility issue, I'd like to say that DMEs are component protected (CP) so each time you swap your DME it will get locked and it is a hassle to get them unlocked. So is it worth it?
Now compatibility issue. Not all MY will work. MY18-19 have B58TU0 engines while MY20-23 have B58TU1 engines and they use different DME. B58TU0 runs DME 8.6.0 while B58TU1 runs DME 8.6T0. As far as I can tell, there are 2 part numbers for MY20-23 X3 M40i DME: 12149897837 and 12145A059D8. These 2 DMEs are also used in many other platforms, e.g. M340i, M440i, 540i, etc. I would stick with the same part number that is listed on your DME just to be sure. |

Thank you for the reply and the part number. I had been searching for the DME by the nomenclature on my vehicles DME and could not find any info.
So basically if I bought another DME, had it married to my car, each time I switched the DME out, it would relock itself? Hopefully someone comes out with a true flex fuel kit for the 22 and up cars. |
