S1 Mode

If you’re in Sport or Sport+ and you toggle the shifter to S1 does the car operate in a “extra” sporty mode? In effect Sport becomes “Sport+” and Sport+ becomes “Sport++”.

No, it merely changes the transmission to “manual” shift mode using the paddles versus shifting for you.

Not sure if thier is a difference between 2022/2023, but shifting the transmission on 2022 into S, makes a big difference if you are already in Sport +, revs higher, more performance. It is the only way I drive the G42.

If you touch the wheel paddles with the shifter in S, it will then go to manual, the Icon changes to M.

What heelsmj said.

There's a sporty nature for the engine, and there's a sporty nature for the transmission. They also compliment each other.

Sport and Sport + (engine) effects throttle input, boost, and shift patterns.
Using the gear selector to move the transmission into Sport further effects the shift patterns. Transmission Sport is also what you want if you wish to shift manually. Shifting manually w/o in Transmission Sport will only put you in manual for a few seconds, and then it's back to Drive.

Thank you. I have the litte switch on the 2023. Once back D, once more S1, pull steering wheel paddles goes full manual when in S1.

Remember, while in Transmission Sport and in manual, holding the right paddle for a couple seconds will place you back in automatic, and holding the left paddle for a couple seconds while in manual will downshift you to the lowest possible gear for your current speed.

Pulling both paddles at the same time will open your moonroof.

if the transmission is in "S1" doesn't that just means your transmission in 1st gear in Sport mode?

Correct.

While in 1st gear my indicator could show S1, M1 or D1. The D1-8 is only shown for those with the xHP Flashtool.

Stop messing with people XC3LLR8. Everyone knows that when you pull both paddles, you take a screenshot of your gauges.

So here’s the thing with the “S1” vs “D” …

BMW made it possible to alter the transmission from comfort to sport in the iDrive settings. When you configure Sport Individual you will see it there. Sport+ already factors it in.

Therefore, it makes the shifting to “S1” redundant if you’re in Sport+ or Sport Individual (with the transmission in sport).

BMW kept it there for two reasons:
1. If you wish to go into permanent manual mode (go into “S” then move gear stick up/down or use paddles)
2. If you wish to use the transmission is sport in conjunction with another mode (i.e., Comfort, Adaptive, Eco Pro, etc.)

Hope that helps! For further reading it should be in the technical data sheets of the G42 and your user manuals

I noticed that with the selector in S and also in Sports+ mode there are more burbles and seems to shift quicker than in Sport+ and selector set D. Maybe it’s placebo but seems to shift differently and more burbles.

3. It must be in this position for launch control

Well yes and no.

Even if it’s in “D” and you try to launch it’ll launch but it won’t say “Launch Control Active.”

Either way the ECU reacts the same way

It could be just you but the TCU doesn’t change from D to S if you’re already in sport transmission mode

BMW M Chief Engineer Dirk Häcker: These cars all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...

TH Thomas: Oh, I see. And most cars go up to ten?

BMW M Chief Engineer Dirk Häcker: Exactly.

TH Thomas: Does that mean it's faster? Is it any faster?

BMW M Chief Engineer Dirk Häcker: Well, it's one faster, in't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be driving at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten in your car. Where can you go from there? Where?

TH Thomas: I don't know.

BMW M Chief Engineer Dirk Häcker: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?

TH Thomas: Put it up to eleven.

BMW M Chief Engineer Dirk Häcker: Eleven. Exactly. One faster.

TH Thomas: Why don't you just make ten faster and make ten be the top number and make that a little faster?

BMW M Chief Engineer Dirk Häcker: [pause] These go to eleven.
