Are you going to protect your G87 with PPF (Paint Protection Film)?

I was told of PPF and I'm thinking about it. It protects well from small scratches, insect marks and some stone damage, but on the other hand it does not work miracles when you drive very fast or go on a circuit, the paint does not look the same, it is an expensive treatment and in many cases the final finish is quite bad.

Do you have experience with PPF?, what are your comments in favor?, what are your comments against?

I will be ordering pre-cut kit and doing it myself. I did my Model 3 two years ago and there is not one paint chip anywhere. I did the whole car for $1500 using 3m pre-cut. It was my first time and came out good except the front and rear bumper, they are a bitch for 1st timer. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it.

I am sure I can a better job this time around on the bumpers of the M2.

If you have it done properly it doesn’t effect the look of the paint. I’ll do it for sure plus ceramic coating. Totally worth it if you plan to keep the car.

Not sure what options you have around your area but PPF on my track cars is perfect. You just ask for the thicker MM version. Here I have about 4 options from cheap to costly. With today's water based paints they are less on the hardness scale, and they get impacted easier. Depending if you car about chips etc, really depends if PPF is for you. I live in AZ and stone chips are daily so with PPF my paint stays perfect and PPF the front every 2-3 years (sooner with track time) and its like new each time. I also ceramic coat everything inside and out just do to the ease of cleaning. I like to hand wash my own rides all of them. lol

I will get the Xpel Ultimate track package and might do the CF roof. If I do the CF roof, I may just pay extra and do the whole car at that point since then it's only the trunk lid full doors and bumper. I have the track package on my 911 and Macan and has worked well protecting the high contact areas.

100% - I have a G42 in BG with 9000 mile and did not do PPF and really regret it.

I’m still debating on doing PPF or going for a clarity coat/auto flex wrap. If PPF then I’m doing just the front, mirror caps and CF roof. My problem is I’m eventually replacing the hood with a CF GTS hood whenever they come out but I don’t want to waste money on PPF’ing the OEM hood if I’m swapping it out anyway so I may do the front and PPF the new hood myself since that should be easy enough.

Either that or go with the Clarity Coat wrap with an entirely different color which is really enticing but the cost has crept up some recently.

I've swung both ways on this, and if you're planning to keep the car a while, it makes more sense as you get ROI. I will have a professional do the front bumper (undecided on hood as well) around break-in service time (hoping nothing happens before then). I will do the mirrors, roof, and side sills myself.

I had a rock land on my roof from a semi (lesson learned) two days after getting my car and while it didn't do any actual damage, I did have to buff out the mark on the carbon roof and that was a wake up call. This car is my baby [blue] and I need to pay extra attention. I have my daily to beat up.

Yes to PPF. My 335 has some small roof dents from hail, and rear quarter dents from shopping cart assholes, so I'm doing full body.

I'm going (again) with Autoflex. New technology. Equally protective. Easier to apply (it's a spray-on peelable paint), comes in clear OR any color. And it's cheaper than PPF (less labor intensive to install).

https://claritycoat.com/

Not all areas have qualified applicators yet. It takes a professional and a high quality paint booth.

Might go with clear (over Toronto Red), or perhaps go with Hellrot or Aventurine Red just for a unique look.

Here's a couple examples, including my M2.

100%.

My previous Audi didn't have PPF and the front end was chewed up. Going to have the front end done.

Doing ceramic myself on top of that.

I'm quite surprised there's not an Autoflex installer in all of Florida. The only one listed on website is no longer in business.

I always do PPF on my new vehicles. I have a 2019 LC500 that I had wrapped with PPF and it looks as good as the day i bought it. The G87 is a lease for me, so I'm only going to do a partial front as opposed to the full job. I figure it will keep the chips away and whoever ends up the 2nd owner will have a nicely taken care of car. BTW, Ive always used XPEL Ultimate and been really satisfied with it.

I just looked and I see 3, all around the Orlando area. Did you see those? Luckily there’s one 20 minutes away from me in the Baltimore area who has great reviews and 5 more within a 100 mile radius.

I never did PPF until I bought my 718. Just so low to the ground and seemed to pick up everything. I also think paints are getting softer and less resilient, maybe because they know people are using PPF now. Porsche even offers it as a factory option.

It doesn't help that they offer no product details on their website...

Edit: Does anyone know how long this is supposed to last?

I’m definitely doing PPF on the front end and a Ceramic tint, contemplating Ceramic in and out at Extreme Colors (BMWPC send all their whips there) the same day I’m doing PCD. Here’s the quote from them if anyone else is taking delivery there and interested in prophylactics for their M2.

I’ve had STEK PPF and GTechniq done on my Camaro and M240i. It makes taking care of the car easier and less stressful. Not to mention the paint looks significantly better after a proper paint correction. Washing the car takes 5 minutes tops. Foam, rinse, air dry, scrub bug splatter. Perfect every time.
