Beware of Simon's Shine Shop in Chicago
Reposting from the M5/F90 forum as I’ve seen them recommended on here from time to time.
They have no business doing PPF. There are so many other places: Lustr, Luminescent Detailing, Chicago Auto Pros, Auto Image, All Wraps, and tons of others that can do WAY better work. I’ve held off on sharing there name for months, this work was done in November, but they don’t want to do anything except redo the entire job, which to me isn’t even remotely acceptable. There’s not a chance in hell I let them have a second crack at my car. Here’s the review I left them on Google. I’m not one to review, this is my first ever review: https://g.co/kgs/3Szemj I didn’t add in the review, but after I showed them the work they said yeah we’ll redo the whole thing. I then called for months without a response. I pulled my call records from Verizon and in the last 60 days I called like 25 times and no one ever answered. Right after calling I called from my work cell and got a someone to pickup 3x in a row. At that point it was apparent they were ignoring me. They finally replied to an email and said that I voided the warranty by having another shop remove it and that all they were willing to do was redo the whole job. They weren’t even willing to give me $500 back to cover the cost of removing it. I paid between $6-7K I don’t remember exactly cause it was during their Black Friday sale, which in hindsight is red flag #1. |

Text from the review:
“If you care about your car, do not take it Simon’s. I had them install a full car paint protection film and let’s just say it was a disaster. They have no business installing paint protection film. They’re a car wash, at best, but I wouldn’t even trust them to babysit my gold fish. My brand new 2023 BMW M5 had less than 200 miles on it when I dropped it off at Simon’s — it returned with a damaged parking sensor, paint damage from the paint protection film knife, and just about every panel failed within days. There was debris under some panels, the door handles looked like crap, the film was poorly aligned, and began peeling in days. They take no responsibility and state that they want to redo the job. That’s not at all acceptable. Why would I trust them again to get a second crack at my car? I had to pay a shop to remove their work, because again, why would I trust them? Then I had to pay another shop to completely redo the vehicle and the 2 jobs are night and day. There’s a few pictures attached, I think the carbon roof says it all, it’s a flat panel, they have a wierd misaligned cutout around the antenna and on the sides one side had way too much material and was peeling, the other side was 1/4-1/2inch uncovered. They didn’t even have the decency to properly attach the plastic roof trim. I had to take it to the dealer and have them reattached it. I was going to say they should stick to Teslas since those are the easiest to PPF, but it appears based on the review below they aren’t even up for that job. In the end I almost felt like they were trolling, I paid $6-7K for the work and I could’ve done it better myself. These guys should just stick to washing inexpensive cars. They have no business handling any car you care about — there are dozens of better shops. Don’t make the same mistake I did choosing them for convenience.” |

Keep writing it. Write it everywhere. Contact google if you need to with pictures. Just keep writing the review. Copy your review so you can easily copy/paste it. Put your computer in a vpn, create a new account and just submit the review daily to every review site there is. It’s going to be a ton of work for them to get it taken down. This society, thanks to tech companies, thinks the best way to deal with everything is censorship. Google: Oh, Someone ripped you off? Well, just don’t tell anyone that way it never happened. Also, dispute the charge. That’s the worst job I’ve ever seen. That’s not even close to being considered poor. That’s simply unfinished. They robbed you. |

thats a pretty poor job. unfortunately with ppf and car wraps its all installer dependent. people watch youtube channels like topaz detailing and think their local guy is similar quality. i know i fell into that trap. had it done on my 458 and my bumper looked like yours, side mirrors had bubbling edges after a year. they didn't wrap edges. i saw a hair trapped under the bra as well.
if i ever get it done again i'm going to find a place that uses precut pieces, no knives, wraps edges, and does in a clean dust free room. that probably wont exist in the midwest for a while.

My sincerest apologies that happened to your car. That is a horrible job. I own a detail studio in Bolingbrook and we have seen a few of the jobs that have come from that shop. Sadly they are a volume shop and while this is an extreme example of what lack of skill in film installation would cause this is unacceptable that they gave you back this car with this. From what i can see this is lack of proper alignment, improper surface prep before film installation, use of a cheaper film to save on costs as well as, lack of a post heat after install. While i use a variety of kits and custom bulk to complete my installs this is pure carelessness on every front from the installer. It’s absurd they wouldn’t stand behind something this bad. If you need any help in the future as a fellow enthusiast id love to help in anyway I can. Im definitely going to use these pictures in the future to educate prospective film clients in my write ups.

Wanted to provide an update — I spoke to Eastman who manufactures Llumar PPF. I was told by the shop they would use Llumar Matte. I have an invoice to prove it. Today, I spoke with Eastman and they said Simons has never ordered Matte PPF from them and the manufacturer is now investigating because clearly they are using some cheaper film and trying to pass it off as an established brand. I called the shop to add this to the list of shit they did. They hung up! 😂
