HUD disappeared. Ix1

since 2 days my HUD disappeared from the windshield. switching on/off via display menu does not help. Holding down the volume button for 30 seconds doesn't help either. are there more people with this problem? my car is an Ix1.

Marcel Onstenk

Every few months my HUD randomly disappears. It then randomly reappears the next time I start the car having left it for a few hours. No explanation from BMW as to why.

not to be condescending, but did you check the HUD physical area to make sure there is nothing sitting on top of the display output area that might be the issue. I noticed when i do temp paper passes to get into military bases, the HUD can be blocked very easily with a paper.

Checked, nothing on it. In the beginning the HUD still came online during start, but last few days it doesn’t work anymore.
Bit frustrating that the dealer only has time first week of July.
What surprised me is how dependent I was on the HUD.Was very searching for all indications and presentation of data. Especially those of the driver assistance systems.

Keep you informed about the outcome.

July? That's almost 2 months away. Is that at your nearest BMW dealer or can you go to one with an earlier appointment? Come to think of it, does BMW's warranty only cover you at Dutch BMW dealers or can you go to any BMW dealer in the EU?

Is the wait so long because they consider this to be a non-urgent issue? For example, if the main screen doesn't work, will they let you bring the X1 in immediately?

Thanks!

Had this happen a few times starting in March on ours. Shutting it off and giving it a bit of time is the only fix-on/off in the settings does nothing. Plan to take it to the dealer here stateside when it gets off the boat in July

Sorry my mistake, I mean June.

Since my BMW dealer is not in my city, I called them and hoped it could be resolved over the phone. Unfortunately that didn’t work out.
Next time I just drive to the dealer and no longer by phone.

I’m not sure ,but I think any dealer in the EU should help me under warranty.

As some people predicted, after 14 days the HUD reappeared in the windshield. I hope this doesn’t happen too often.
Does it still make sense to go to the dealer for diagnosis if everything works and the car does nog give an error message?

If the HUD wasn't there for 10 minutes my wife would be shouting from the roof tops, not there for days camping out at the dealer before its fixed. I'd definitely take it in and see if anything is happening or if the car needs a full update maybe. If they don't find anything and it happens again take it in whilst it's happening. They tend not to believe you if they don't see it.

I have no really looked down into the HUD assembly(?). Today was my very first long drive in my new X1. 300+ miles with another 50 miles to go later this evening. The weather was sunny and cool around 70 degrees, so I had all the windows and sunroom wide open.

Just stopped to rest before going the last few miles. I noticed the dashboard and most of my interior got real dusty.(my bad for keeping the windows open) I used a little duster to dust off everything, but I couldn't tell how one was supposed to clean the HUD projector thing? Thanks!

I just reach in with a lens cleaning cloth and gently clean it

I wonder if using one of the cleaning gels might be easier since fewer contortions would be needed?

Maybe depends on your build, but I don’t really have to contort myself at all, but I am tall and lanky. It’s only maybe 3-4 inches below the bezel.

Yeah we just wipe ours with a duster / clean dry cloth. Very occasionally with a damp cloth.
