And I think it’ll further isolate us. I may be on the front end of those in my generation (millennial) getting left behind by technology, but I had no interest in Apple’s new VR headset. It’s crazy to me…strapping a screen to my head…people are already obsessed with their phones. This will take it to the next level. Bleh.

It's insanely scary and I worry about what life will be like in 50 years with this and AI. The next step in the evolution is implanting chips in our heads so we won't have to wear the goggles.

Luckily for us - we will all be too old to worry about this but 2 generations from now are absolutely screwed. Apple is a very dangerous company

I am on the opposite side. I think we live at a time where we will see major breakthroughs on so many fronts due to machine learning (which has been used for many years) and AI (also been used for a long time, on the defense side). Research will further accelerate and unimaginable speeds compared to current protocols. I see chemical and medical companies accelerate their research testing approach by 90+% due to highly improved analysis techniques, I have real hope that we will see cures for major terminal diseases, and semi-autonomous will be real in 10 years (for folks that want/need it (i.e.elderly, disabled, etc.) or for the pesky rush hour city traffic- sign me up now!). Is it scary, hell yes, really scary indeed, but there has never been been a major invention EVER that was not super scary as they can always be used to cause devastating events. It needs regulation, and at least, my opinion is that the US sucks at regulating major industries/inventions. The EU is a lot better at protecting users, privacy rights, and safety concerns, but it really needs global regulations, which is way more complex as some might not want North Korea or other conflict countries to use this technology due to obvious reasons. So is there a simple solution, no, will this take endless time, yes, with there be likely some devastating events, I do believe so because the cat is out of the bag, and everyone has been developing and using it for years already. We'll see another major tech shift, but I am an optimist, and the stuff I can see will make lots of things better for a lot of folks around the world, a lot better if used responsibly. That's why I think it's incredibly exciting. (ok, I am not sure that I would volunteer for a chip in my head/brain`.... let's wait for another 15-20 years on that). Fire away.

VR is interesting, but I'm more interested in AR (actual reality) yes I'm old, but there is no substitute for reality, I don't think science/tech will ever be able to match what nature has created. Pretty early in the day to be waxing poetically.

I think VR but more so AI should be in some sort of way legally limited... however our GOVT won't do that because it would be seen as anti competitive vs other countries... i somewhat fear what life will be like 30 years away. Reality will need to be questioned in almost every situation.

Its more properly a AR set- augmented reality. AR sets really are the way of the future once they can get them to look like semi-normal glasses. I don't particularly like the idea of VR long term as it is a really isolating experience. I can see the benefit of AR however, especially as a mobile computing device. It could almost be like bringing a multi monitor desktop rig long with you. Working at a coffee shop or on a plane would be amazing. We're probably a long way from people wearing them around all the time like you worry about, but I can see them making a dent on laptops.

I saw that apple VR release video, great marketing, but def can see this being just the beginning. I could easily see people no longer even interacting with other people for the most part, instead just living in VR with AI. Relationships, friends, activities, you name it will be tailored exactly how you want it. dopamine will be pushed to unlimited range, pretty nuts. Not for me, but Im old school

I was personally not very impressed with the Apple stuff. Just seems like an overpriced VR headset to me. I don't see much to distinguish it from other higher end VR headsets other than software maybe. I did not watch the whole announcement, so I only found out later that it's not even coming out until NEXT year... that just made it seem even worse.

Personally as an Apple fan I feel Apple has been putting out a bunch of crap for the past few years.

On the surface I really like it. If they can keep the windows stationary as you move your head that would eliminate the need for a cumbersome monitor. It'll definitely be a game changer when they can scale this head set back to a eye glass size device.

Side note: My pops was involved with an early VR sim lab at NASA. He said one of the problems is not everyone can work in VR for very long without getting motion sickness or headaches. So it might be a bit limited.

For better or for worse, you can't stick a pin in technology and say "we will go no farther".

This makes me think of this movie from 2009 starring Bruce Willis called "Surrogates."

For me it's not just wearing it, it depends on how the game/experience is made and how it moves. I'm basically fine with anything stationary. As in you stand in one spot and do everything from there. Once you start moving around in the VR world like walking around it completely makes me sick. Now I get motion sickness in general, but moving around in VR is basically instant motion sickness for me.

My guess is it has to do with your body not following your motions in VR. Like walking when you are actually just standing still. Some people have no issues at all, but not me.

I tried VR with a flight-sim (WW2-era IL2-Sturmovik), and was blown away by how realistic the cockpit feels, it really feels like you are literally there, and you begin to notice details that went unnoticed before, partially because they are much larger now (everything is larger in VR), and partially because they now have 3-dimensions, which makes them "pop".

So I could't believe how realistic the cockpit of HS-129 "tank buster" felt the first time I virtually "sat" there, but unfortunately all the graphics outside this cockpit felt like 1024p resolution, which is a far cry from my 4k monitor.

And because of all that realism your brain gets tricked into believing you're literally flying an airplane, which means motion sickness while doing even mild combat manoeuvres. I got used to that after a while, though, and then it just added up to the immersion.

That’s already started. Humans are built for personal connection and not connection through a computer. So many people (myself included as I type this lol) have their heads buried in their phones. Why when we are so connected through technology today people are so lonely? The studies show more loneliness and increased medication usage for things like depressions and anxiety. I wonder if the creation and move to virtual, augmented, or AI will rewire how we are as humans to an almost robotic way. Look at some of these kids today. They can barely look you in the eye and have a convo. My friends teens aren’t out and about like we were. Also, people hide behind their keyboards and are down right evil and hateful these days because you don’t have to see someone and say it to their face. I get things evolve and change but it doesn’t look like a positive outlook from a humanity standpoint.

Someone mentioned cures for diseases. I would be curious to know how the medical field will pivot to make money once they cure diseases that are profitable.

Augmented reality is an awesome step that I'm super excited about. It doesn't completely take you out of this world the way VR does, so you still interact with this world, but it "enhances" it. Imagine driving and instead of looking down at a GPS screen, the arrows populate the windshield to allow you to see where you should be going directly in front of you (assuming we're still driving and self driving cars aren't the norm). Head up displays are already a very simplified version of AR.
